People should sometimes be rewarded for their kindness. This is where you buy all your drinking water from, full stop, and it's been like this for decades, because, like much of the world, the water coming through the pipes isn't drinkable, never has been, and never will be.

Coca-Cola executives and some outside experts say the company has been unfairly maligned for the water shortages. They blame rapid urbanization, poor planning and a lack of government investment that has allowed the city’s infrastructure to crumble.

Correct, the local plant consuming 2% of a person's typical water use is not the cause of the water shortage. Migrant caravans shedding Central Americans, government officials stealing the infrastructure budget, and other factors that are unsexy to NYT journoscum are the cause.

The author's attempt to tie it to dire economic conditions is horseshit. It's the opposite. People have more change jangling around in their pockets these days, and it's easy to just pop into the nearest this-and-that store and buy some chips and soda. Sugar, salt, and fat taste good, so people eat way too much of it. Obesity is a disease of wealth. And despite the people in these pictures being a lot poorer than you and me, they're a lot richer than their parents and grandparents were.
