Even after I gave birth to my son a few years back, a doctor was trying to get me prescribed on the pill because "I should wait several months before getting pregnant again." Fair enough, but when I brought up that I could use other very effective means of contraception, the doctor looked legitimately pissed off at me (spoiler alert: I somehow managed to not get pregnant too soon while not on the pill, because I have a functioning brain). I refused to take the pill then mostly because my hormones crashed after giving birth (yes, it's a very real and overwhelming thing), so the very last thing I wanted was to take a different set of hormones altogether that have been known to make women crazier. When I brought this up to the GYN, he was like "Well, then you can get antidepressants to combat that." Fuck that noise!

One time a GYN tried to shill the pill on me for no other reason than "It can maybe slightly lessen your odds of getting cervical cancer." When I brought up that the pill actually heightens the risk of the far more common breast cancer (I even pulled up a proven study to her), she was dead silent and was like "whatever." Absolutely crazy.

Don't get me wrong, there's legit medical reasons why some women are on the pill ... But doctors will find a reason to prescribe it to anyone.

Yeah, sometimes they do be like that. The best way to determine if you have a shitty doctor or not is to ask lots of questions and offer any sort of pushback. A bad doctor is impatient and gets pissy when you take up their time. A bad doctor does not want to be contradicted.

One time, I had a doctor who insisted on surgery for an issue I was having. I asked about non-surgical options and he got pissy. His attitude rubbed me the wrong way and I told him I would get a second opinion. His last words to me were "see you in a few weeks when you change your mind." My problem went away on its own and I later spoke to an older, more experienced GI doctor who told me that I was wise to follow my gut because it would have been a costly and expensive surgery for no reason.

A good doctor listens to you and tells you that you know your body.
