The reality is that women like being objectified; what they're really most scared of seems to be abandonment. They're afraid if they don't make a fuss it means that men won't value them, or in some cases they're just jealous that they personally don't get as much attention as some other women do.

It's like with transexuals or something. Men being traditionally chivalrous and protective of them, yet somewhat aloof and dismissive gives them a sense of gender euphoria.

Unfortunately that's absolutely a way that society fails boys: when you're young it's difficult to understand that you aren't actually supposed to take feminism seriously. If you do nobody will be happy (except maybe our corporate overlords as everyone worksumes to fill the void). As a man, people (especially women) want you to be somewhat incorrigible.

As originally stated: Women are not equal, they are not like men, and everyone would probably be ok with that if there wasn't the implication it would lead to abandonment or exploitation.
