I have to disagree. Wheelock's Latin can't compare to Lingva Latina at all, although I'm slowly beginning to use the former more now that I have the practical experience of the latter.

My Latin teacher in high school didn't like those books because they left people with lots of knowledge gaps.

This is, unfortunately, true. While the natural method is great, I found myself trying to speak Latin early on and getting it wrong because exceptions and other things were often slowly introduced later in the book. Exceptions are really the biggest pain in the ass for this, because I can know everything about a word except one form I've never seen before, and then I only know it's probably one of a few, but I end up needing to look it up. The Oxford Latin Dictionary is very nice for this, although I'm occasionally unable to get answers from it, tiny little things.
