The biggest reason it's so hard to figure out what Gamergate was and what it wasn't is so many people did so many things "in service" of gamergate that the line was hard to find what should and should not be considered Gamergate. So many people thought it was a fight against SJWs, and so many people thought it was just "ethics in games journalism."

I mean it's not confusing when you realize that journalists, SJWs, and feminists are the same people. It's one group with 100% overlap. Journalists were being unethical because they wanted to feminize gaming and push SJW politics. It's one enemy.

I think the more liberal members of GG may have been in denial (or just confused) about WHY journalists always lie. One day, for no reason at all, every journalist decided to push the same lies about gamers. What a coincidence! It can't be my Obama-era libtard politics that is to blame though! Politically illiterate normie gamers struggled to comprehend the nature of the fight. I was very active in GG and spent a lot of it unsure what an SJW even was. I assumed they were just trolls for a while. It was a different time.

It's not one circle, but three concentric circles. The interior, smallest circle is "jounalists"; the middle circle is "SJWs"; and the main, largest circle is "feminists."

All SJWs are feminists, but not all feminists are SJWs (see, e.g., Christina "Based Mom" Hoff-Sommers, Camille Paglia, et al.). Similarly, all journalists are SJWs, but not all SJWs are journalists.

Zoe the Whore whores out to several guys in the industry, uses her influence over them to do various things like sabotage some projects that were competition to her own, and get undue coverage in various gaming publications about shit as asinine as "she implanted a useless chip into her arm" and "she made a website videogame about depression".
Whore had a boyfriend and when he finds out, he dumps her, and writes a blogpost about her shitty sexpest abusive nepotistic antics. Matt Jarbo makes a video about it, gets DMCA'd by Whore.
Jim makes a video about the DMCA, and this brings the scandal to the public eye at large.

People get angry at Whore, dig into her history and find more shit (like she was a horrible porn model), but also find a whole bunch of other corrupt shit going on in the gaming journo industry: people pushing progressive politics, rigging awards, giving coverage to their friends, roomates, fuckbuddies, and ideological comrades, and denying it (or trashing) people they didn't like for whatever reason, among other things.

The industry, both journos and devs, rallied to protect Whore and the other, lesser whores. At some point Sarkeesian and Wu insert themselves into the kerfuffle. Gamers Are Dead articles are published in unison by multiple outlets.

Websites started banning discussion.
At some point semi-famous actor Adam Baldwin (most famous for being Jayne in Firefly) backed up the Gamers and coined the term GamerGate (it had been "Five Guys Burgers and Fries" and other names until then). Various retards rise to fame on both sides of the conflict, some of them still coasting on it to this day. Sargon and Ralph, for example.
Notably, Milo, who is a high-level political mischief maker to this day.

Recently, regarding Sweet Baby Inc and Stellar Blade controversies, former Diablo 2 developer Grummz manages to actually do Gamergate 2 at a smaller scale, but it fizzled out quickly.
