Something I have only recalled lately:
There is a similar game to Dustborn but, made slightly better. It isn't something I would enjoy but, it actually comes across as more of a game than Dustborn:
Road 96 is an adventure game where you play as some random teenager running away from home and attempting to escape the fictional country of Petria. Petria is depicted as a dictatorship ruled by President Tyrak. Apparently he is suppose to look like Leonid Brezhnev.
Aside from that the game doesn't seem delve into real world politics all that much. There is a rebel faction but, they're not painted as good guys either (but, I think you can influence it so that they succeed in their goals).
There is no combat in this game but, if you make the wrong decisions it is possible to die and there are multiple endings.
The studio that made, DigixArt, it was only about 15 people at the time and it looks like it may have taken only 2 years to make.
According to wikipedia the game got mixed/middling reviews
The characters seem a lot less abrasive than any of Dustborn's cast and it comes across as better written. On the other hand, some of the reviews on steam state the majority of the choices in dialogue you make don't matter.
If anyone cares to see it, here is the first video in a playlist:
