Hate to say it, but Roman Polanski did an entire movie directing himself and was good in it (The Fearless Vampire Killers). He did other cameos to. Worst you could pick on would be his cameo in China Town but that's mainly because it's an eccentric performance and it leaves himself open to it. If another actor delivered the same performance, it wouldn't be picked apart. Taika Waititi might have gone a bit off these days but he was great in the original What We Do in the Shadows which he co-directed. So it can be done well. Honorary mention for Gene Wilder also because whilst Young Frankenstein was directed by Mel Brooks, there's a reason it feels a little different to Blazing Saddles, Men in Tights, etc., because Wilder was involved in the directing a bit. He's actually the reason Mel Brooks doesn't have a cameo in that movie when he does in everything else. because Wilder felt like you did and didn't let Brooks have a part in it!

There are quite a few directors who act in their own movies. For example Sylvester Stallone directed, among others, all the Rocky movies except 1 & 5 (or the Creed spin-offs) and Rambo 4 which was great.

Obvious answer is the family wanted the deceased to be in the photo. The grave represents them. People pose with tombstones for this reason all the time. The whole point of taking a photo in a cemetery is to be by a specific grave to include the gone but remembered.

The dead guy likely loved Trump and would be honored that he visited.

And that's when it's time for one of Trump's people to kindly usher them all away from the tombstones. You surely don't let your guy pose with a giant grin and thumbs up in front of multiple tombstones of fallen soldiers during the burial. The right or wrong of it is irrelevant, the optics are what matter and sometimes grieving families could use a little rescuing themselves.

The reason this photo is such a meme is because everyone understands that it's inappropriate.

Even if you disagree at best this whole thing is another unhelpful distraction that could've been easily avoided.
