The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced they will step back as "senior" royals and work to become financially independent.

In a statement, Prince Harry and Meghan also said they plan to split their time between the UK and North America.

The BBC understands no other royal - including the Queen or Prince William - was consulted before the statement and Buckingham Palace is "disappointed".

Senior royals are understood to be "hurt" by the announcement.

In their unexpected statement on Wednesday, also posted on their Instagram page, the couple said they made the decision "after many months of reflection and internal discussions".

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

They said they plan to balance their time between the UK and North America while "continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages".

"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said discussions with the duke and duchess on their decision to step back were "at an early stage", adding: "We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

The couple's announcement on Wednesday comes two months after the Duke of York withdrew from public life after a BBC interview about his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in August.

According to an Ipsos MORI poll in December 2017 (right after his engagement was announced), Harry had a popularity rating of 81%. This put him neck-and-neck with QEII. In a February 2018 Ipsos MORI poll, Prince Harry and Prince William were the two most popular royals.

That’s something that isn’t mentioned nearly enough to counter Harry’s squawking about “racist” Brits.
Apparently it's all the way down to 33%. That's almost a Rekieta-level self-nuke. In fact I used to have a relatively favorable opinion of him. He was obviously never much of a brain but he didn't seem like a complete asshole either.

think that’s something Harry never really grasped. We are a parliamentary monarchy, it’s not like the king literally rules the country but the monarch does work. Liz worked daily her whole life. The spare has all the benefits and none of the responsibility. It’s a much better job than being king in some ways.
the Whole Family are Usurpers and the real King is in exile in Bavaria...

I'm honestly astounded by how many A-logs and shallow e-whores talk about Megan and Harry.
Like, yes, they are giant retards who fuck up everything they touch, but imagine making 30 minute long videos when either person so much as sneezes.
The Royal Family equivalent of DSP's a-logs.
The worst is this mush mouth bong who has such a terrible speech impediment she can barely be understood:
Imagine thinking Megan and Harry are worse than Charles, a member of the WEF and Andrew, a literal pedophile rapist. Delusional.

He got to a point where he was executing his duties so reliably that the Queen deputized him to represent her at events across the Commonwealth. Meghan was the wrecking ball.

He could've married Chelsy and be charging a 5x markup to do what he loves and guide safaris. Dozy shmuck.
I read someplace (can't remember where), that he was never over Chelsy, and it was likely because she was not particularly impressed with him being a prince. That is, if she were with Harry, it's because she liked him, and not the Prince.

She might have made a half-decent, if not subtly defiant Duchess, but as I understand it, her attitude towards marriage into to the Royals was "fuck that noise". If that is true, she's the best player in all of this drama.

The "exile" wants to return. :lit:

EXCLUSIVE Duke of Sussex asks former aides to help plot RETURN from his US exile in first stage of 'rehabilitation' strategy: Prince's friends vow to help smooth path back and dub it 'Operation Bring Harry In From The Cold'

This is the kind of story that you would watch on Lifetime, the new king asks his brother that, if he really wants to come back, he needs to do it without his wife. In a perfect fantasy setting, the prince would say "no way" and rather risk to be removed from the line and keep the wife and kids and have a "normal" happier life together.

In reality, I think Harry's too afraid of leaving Meghan because he's perhaps afraid of her. Otherwise, I can see him ditching her so he can go back to live without worries and having the life of a bachelor with some nannies taking care of the kids.

The thing is, Harry has more than enough money to start a small business.
But that would mean sullying his hands with work.
Not the sort of immigrant who opens a store.

And of course being English, an ethnic restaurant is out of the question. :P
What's funny is that I can imagine QEII actually doing this if she had ever found herself in the same situation. She would get her hands dirty doing work and would be great doing it.

Lili seems to resemble a mini Pippi Longstocking.
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww, that's adorable.

There is nothing wrong with these kids and they're so lucky to have inherited most of their genes from Harry. I get that Meghan doesn't want them exposed to media, but I think that's not her only motivation. She wants to keep absolute control of the pics to charge for them.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww
This was the photo that reminded me of Pippi:

I'd bet cash money (only a sure bet for me) that those chirrunns DO NOT have her DNA.
In every available photo we’ve seen, Archie looks a lot like both baby Harry and baby Meghan.

At least as a baby, Lili looked like a standard issue Windsor:

She always got her hands dirty, even joining the Army during WWII and working as a motor vehicle mechanic and driver, repairing and servicing trucks and ambulances. Prior to that, she’d been planting and tending gardens during the war, and also did a significant amount of forestry. Guests who stayed with her in the summer marveled at how the Queen washed dishes in the more informal setting of Balmoral. When President Eisenhower stayed there in 1959, QEII personally baked the scones she served to him at tea. I don’t think her mother or sister ever deigned to humble themselves in such ways.

If what many suspect is true, he's an abuse victim that's been manipulated and might be afraid of being without her. He's expressed before that he wanted to protect her the way he couldn't protect his mother, which, so much ick that I can't process it all, but it's entirely possible that Meghan has wedged herself into the Diana-shaped hole in him and if that is suddenly emptied out, it would be very destabilizing for him.

Do I think he'd do something drastic? Not openly, probably, but I suspect it would be extremely ugly.

That might not be the worst fate. I know a couple of people that plaster pictures of their non-famous babies all over social media and I stay out of it, but I thoroughly object to them doing that. Hell, if I were a famous mom, I'd probably want as few public pictures of my kids as possible. Even if her intentions aren't good, it's not the worst thing for them. We could argue that things that happen in private probably aren't great, but since we can't see them, it's hard to speculate.

I've always respected QEII. She wasn't perfect, but I believe she always thought herself to be a servant of the people and that was her burden as a result of her incredible privilege. Shame that she couldn't stop her family from all of the drama, but that was kind of inherent in the weird shit that goes on in that family (curtseying to people in whatever order that you are related to is always so off-putting to me, but the drivers behind that sort of thing are indicators that your family life is far from normal).

Once again, Swedish Royal family win by being boring.

Maybe not? 🤔🤔

Before marrying the second born child of Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, the Duchess of Varmland was a well-known party girl having posed topless for now defunct Lads Mag Slitz and giving saucy interviews about kissing female porn stars at parties.

Aged 20, then known as Sofia Hellqvist, she got a job as a glamour model. In one of her first jobs she wore nothing but camouflage underwear with a live boa constrictor wrapped around her neck to cover her modesty.

Clearly a hit with readers of lads mag Slitz, in 2004 she won the title of Miss Slitz.

So I guess she used to be a yachter 🤔🤔

Video update from Kensington Palace. I'm amazed William went for that, he's normally ferocious about guarding their family privacy.

There was something I found a bit distasteful/offputting about how produced and scripted that video was, especially the faux-Super8 segments with sprocket holes. On the other hand, I guess after the entire "where's Kate" shitshow, I can't really fault them for clearly having hired a competent production company and PR agent to effectively create a polished advertisement as an announcement, and good for Kate on her recovery.

The Waleses have been releasing videos in this exact style since they were the Cambridges (e.g. for their 10th wedding anniversary, when Kate took the kids to help out at the toy bank, BTS at the Coronation, etc.). They do very well in terms of online engagement and the whole cinematic/epic approach suits the grandeur of the monarchy IMO.

'It's not good': New Royal Statue divides opinion

A new statue designed to commemorate Elizabeth II - the UK's longest-serving monarch - has received a mixed reception.

The sculpture of the royal couple in the Parterre Garden at Antrim Castle Gardens

The bronze sculpture, created by north Belfast artist Anto Brennan, was unveiled in Antrim Castle Gardens on Friday.
Since then, the statue of the late queen, Prince Philip and two corgis has attracted some criticism on social media and commentary from visitors to the County Antrim gardens.
Antrim and Newtownabbey councillor Vera McWilliam told BBC News NI: “We have to be honest, it does not resemble the queen in any shape or form.”

'Hope they got it for free'

Richard from Antrim said he was "really disappointed" after seeing the statue online and then coming to see it with his wife.
"Whoever signed that off needs their eyes tested. It's not good," he added.
"I would take it away. It doesn’t do anything in memory for Her Majesty, so definitely I would remove it."
Brenda from Lisburn thinks that the statue should have been "made to look older" but "on the whole it is really nice" and "you still get what it represents and what it is about".
"It caught my eye right away," she continued.
"You can see who they are, but I think definitely it should have been her just before she died to capture the whole meaning of who she was and what she represented."

Alejandro said the statues of the late prince and corgis were nice

Alejandro from London was visiting Antrim Castle Gardens with two friends from El Salvador.
He thought the statue didn't "seem like the queen".
"As it is in her memory I guess it is a good thing but it doesn’t look like her.
"The dogs and Prince Philip look nice, but the queen, it doesn’t look like her," he added.

'Leave it the way it is'

Cheryl, Gordon and their son have recently returned from London, where they went on on a tour of some of the royal sculptures

Cheryl and Gordon from Saintfield said they liked the sculpture but had some ideas about how it could have been improved.
Cheryl said there is "something not right about her upper body posture and her right arm but it’s still lovely to see her".
Gordon added: "I wouldn’t have noticed that it didn’t look like the queen but with seeing it on Facebook and now that I see it yes, it probably isn’t a true reflection of her.
"It's just the face, the rest of the character of her looks correct but the face is maybe not a true reflection of her.
"It is what it is, we all know who she is and what it’s meant to be so I would just leave it the way it is."

Francis and Marie felt it was a "down to earth" representation of the late queen

Francis and Marie from Magherafelt were very positive about the sculpture.
"It’s great, I think they have it down to the tee," Francis told BBC News NI.
"They’ve got the queen as she's young. I think the two would be very pleased with it. And they’ve got the corgis all round.
"That is the queen, she loved being outside and that’s why there’s a smile on her face."
Marie added that the statue "looks like her when you see her out with the horses and dogs. It's more of her private life, more down to earth".

'It's down to personal taste'

The debate over the sculpture began on the comments section of a social media post by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council featuring the first photos of the sculpture.
Comments have since been turned off.
The proposal to commission a sculpture of the late queen and her two corgis came in January 2023.
There was already a bronze statue of Prince Philip in the Parterre Garden.
The Deputy Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Paul Dunlop attended the unveiling of the new statue.
He told BBC News NI: "It's down to personal taste, everyone has their own opinion but it is what the sculpture represents that is important."
When the sculpture was unveiled, Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Neil Kelly described it as a "beautiful statue".
Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council said they are "delighted with the generally positive response to the new Queen Elizabeth II sculpture in Antrim Castle Gardens".
In a statement, it added it acknowledged "that art can sometimes spark diverse opinions, but it's important to emphasise that the sculpture has been warmly received by most who have seen it in person".
"The statue beautifully captures Her Majesty's grace and steadfastness, standing as a fitting tribute to her extraordinary life and reign, it added.
Its creator, Anthony 'Anto' Brennan, is best known for his chess sets of prominent Northern Irish political figures.
BBC News NI has approached Brennan for comment.
