I don't get it.

There are broadly two types of physicists, theoretical and experimental. Theoretical physicists use math to prove their hypothesis, like what math researchers do. Experimental physicists are the ones that run experiments to prove their hypothesis, like using lasers and particle accelerators. Here, Gordan Freeman is a theoretical physicist so he wouldn't be running experiments, hence the ruined immersion.

To be fair, apparently most papers shat out by scientists nowadays are badly written or even completely false, and only used to boost their status in the scientific community, or to get them in the headlines of news with insane promises of crazy shit (NEW TECHNOLOGY WILL CURE CANCER AND MAKE YOUR PHONE BATTERY LAST FOREVER ACCORDING TO NEW SCIENTIFIC PAPER) . At least its been this was the last 2 decades, and its especially bad with chinese scientists and professors.
