Passes are straight up a scam. You can bypass the captcha using a userscript on any device, so all that it offers is allowing jannies to more accurately track you down. You do get immunity to certain low tier bans though.
I'm pretty sure the real appeal is for samefagging by copy/pasting pretyped replies and posting them in quick succession faster than the post timer would allow, or for enabling VPNs so you can pretend to be other countries on flag boards. Or for being able to toggle the since4pass icon to "prove" how long you've been there, but that's only if you started early, and I'm convinced at least one guy has probably bought an old pass from someone else to pretend to be an oldfag.

I stopped by /m/ earlier to see what they were saying about the new Gundam Breaker game. Since their overwhelming negativity saved me from buying the last game - ironically also titled New Gundam Breaker - a couple years ago, I figured I could trust their general consensus. I found that they were extremely positive about the new game and were having fun making complete abominations. Awesome, thumbs up, happy times for all... however, the jannies must have bought the game too, because outside of those threads the board was a fucking disaster.

The place was being spammed to hell by retards all screaming at each other that every new thread was a "slide" thread. (For the literally clueless: a slide thread is a low quality, usually bait thread started to push other threads off the board) It seemed like every thread I clicked on the first page -that wasn't a general thread- was like that. I checked the desuarchives just for mentions of the word slide, and there was over a half dozen just from the past 24 hours, which will really flood a slow board when the moderation is lacking, and on /m/ it is certainly lacking. How fucked does it have to be, when the general threads -usually the designated shitting streets of a board- are somehow the more quality threads? It's like I'm taking crazy pills.

As for the such-accused slide threads, the users were blaming that Duel faggot (DuelGundam2099, discussed briefly around here) for spamming the board with the shit threads to push other threads they were also spamming, and were crosslinking to the spam posts in other threads pushed off the board and into the archives as proof. I checked /m/'s deleted posts in desuarchive just to get a sense of how woefully behind the eight ball the jannies are and it was chock full of sperging about this tard, and then ghost posts from them seething yet again that all their posts were purged (caught a ban) for doing exactly the same shit they are doing now.

This is exactly why you can't pay jannies; they will be able to afford to buy distractions. An entertained janny is an ineffective janny. They must have gone without hot pockets for months to scrounge up for Gundam Breaker 4.

This is the same observation I've made, except it was about a different board, and the entire board, not just the first page. The entire site is increasingly like this, with some deranged retard manipulating the system, revealing exactly how low the true user count is.

Something that hit me lately is how the general thread is deeply unsuited to the imageboard model. At that point, why not use a real forum? I guess imageboards really are dead. What a shame, they were a good idea. What a rotten way to die.

where they fleece you with passes is mobile and whatever ip-range a janny decided to ban that day, a script won't help there.

generals have nothing to do with imageboards or not, it's just an effect how people communicate. inevitably there will be a recurring topic or happening that will get a lot of traffic because a lot of people want to talk about it, a general is both easier to find and containment thread so people don't shit up the rest and don't generate dozens of threads about the same shit. they work like a sticky that doesn't need janny intervention.
of course generals come with it's own problems since there isn't a perfect solution, but those problems are usually contained in the general as well. you can look at generals as sub-"boards" of bigger boards.

4 years ago I bought 5 Gb of pay as you go data from a residential Proxy service for $7. If my mobile IP range happens to be banned for whatever reason, I type out my post, flick on the proxy as I submit the post and it goes through. After all that time and thousands of posts I still have 3 Gb of data left.

I understand that most people aren’t going to do that and would prefer the streamlined nature of the pass, but if you catch the ire of a mid level JimJam you’re pretty much fucked without recourse if you’re using a pass.

/m/ has several identifiable spammers and schizos now. A non-exhaustive list:
>Duel (spams his wiki links and spam images to hit the Desuarchive leaderboard; blatantly ban evades; derails threads he doesn't like; whines about being stalked by "Duelrager" whenever called out)
>The two or three retards who flip out whenever they think they see Duel; many times they're right but there are also some false positives for Duel
>Anti-Transformers Nulee (now says that Transformers discussion belongs on /toy/ to keep /co/ from getting more generals -- ironic considering /toy/ is filled with generals -- and also says that Yamato and Brave series threads belong on /a/ because they're not about piloted robots)
>Anti-watch thread faggot (claims the "what are you watching" threads are a vehicle for blogposting and responds to every post in those threads with some variation of "start a blog"; Duel uses these threads so they're mainly a vehicle for his spam and the anti-Duel vigilantes to scrap with him)
>Bikini-schizo (/v/edditor who spams threads with his obsession about characters he deems "aliens" not having pooping buttholes and speaking Starcraft alien languages, and Kishida supposedly introducing "woke" bikini censorship in anime and video games)
>Zetarager (guy who makes countless spam threads trying to prove Zeta Gundam is objectively an awful show while 0083 and Evangelion are the best mecha shows ever made)
>Jenny/AkumatsuT (tranny scanlator who also posts anti-Zeta bait to waste people's time; believes he's a l33t h@x0r for spamming 4chan while others wonder when he'll finish his translation projects)
>ARR/Anonymous Russian Rippers (ESL fansub group whose "subs" are either stolen from another group, HK bootlegs, or MTLd from a foreign language dub -- they also alter the subs to put in anti-vax/anti-woke/pro-Putin messages and believe this job is enough to warrant begging for money, both on /m/ and in their subs, and paywalling shows they don't have the rights to. Duel also worked for them as an editor briefly; his only issue with their subs is the relatively recent insertion of political messages)
>The guy(s) who spam "You are the worst poster in this general" in the toku generals
<REDDIT SPACE
/m/ has bad moderation, ironically, because Duel got the previous janny who kept the board in check fired (he claims he gave Hiro money on a livestream to do this). At this point I doubt /m/ even has a dedicated janny; it's a slow board, and as long as Hiro nets money by letting GoodSmile and Discotek shill threads be made, what does he care? The tranny jannies don't care about the board's subject matter, and /m/ isn't a particularly chuddy board, so they won't action reports unless you're a pass holder (though someone who used a Stonetoss comic as the opening image for a thread got their file deleted recently).

I had a longer post but I accidently'd the entire page and it got ate up by the intergalactic bit bucket, so I'll just sum it up instead:
Man, that really sounds like a bunch of bullshit some retard just made up. I'm going to need some broofs. 🐓

They are now that banhappy troons just constantly ban for no reason. I actually got one a couple times with crypto when moot was still around just because I'd spent so much time on the site that it seemed like an okay way to keep it running, but that was when it was practically impossible to get banned without going full retard.

So you could just log in from a different browser/IP when you were about to do something that would get you banned.

Maybe I've been fortunate for the most part in regard to the generals I've frequented, as I've rarely had a problem with them. The sole exception would be /arg/ on /k/, which is also the only general I used to frequent that had more than a couple of trips who regularly posted. That general is full of retards and troons. Can't say I blame someone looking to buy their first AR who simply creates a new thread to ask instead of wading into the /arg/ cesspool.
