To my knowledge, women have to face harder tests than men for medical professions since a long time. This is designed to deter them from studying it. This stems from Japans experience that many women study medicine, only for them to to practice it only a couple of years before marrying and settling. Since Japans needs these medical doctors, they rather want to have men studying it, who don't do that.

The same thing happens in the West; wamams go to college, go into lower tier practices (GP, pediatricans etc) and then either stop practicing altogether after marrying some other rich white collar professional or work tens of thousands fewer hours over the course of their career compared to male doctors.
