I'm bipolar, it absolutely tracks. Her journal definitely has the hallmarks of a abnormal brain. Scattered scribbles, no coherency, lots of obsessions, hyperfixation on sex (that alone is a symptom of mania). It actually tracks, a relative of mine is bipolar. The inability to get a job, awfull art, persecution complex, bisexual, lived under parents roof in her 30's and a healthy addiction to posting cringe online. Got caught in her younger days carrying knives in her purse.
With the right meds a bipolar person is almost as functional as a mentally healthy person, but notice I said almost. It's still a struggle to keep a steady job, thought patterns get wierd, moods might still swing - not enough to be considered a mood swing, but enough to make it difficult to maintain relationships with loved ones. There's a lot of anger that comes with this disorder, anger at yourself, at your parents, at the world. Before I was put on meds I said things to other people that I absolutely regret out of that anger.
From her journal I'm pretty confident in saying that she was not on the right meds; in fact since she denied her diagnosis at one point, I feel pretty confident in assuming she wasn't on any meds.
Both bipolar disorder and schizophrenia both require a life long cocktail of drugs. The problem is, when properly medicated we feel fine and normal, which "obviously" means we don't need the meds, which causes a relapse. Then we're back on the meds, feel great, stop them... It's far rarer to find a person who is always consistent with their meds than not. Personally, I don't understand that, because I have terrible withdrawal if I miss a day. It's easier to just take the dumb things, even if I do passionately hate doing it.
But knowing her brain was fucked up doesn't excuse her actions. She is the one who decided to kill people in her anger. She wasn't psychotic and on a break from reality, this was planned well in advance. She knew she was doing something bad, but she did it anyway. That's not mental illness.
