The new Atelier looks good too, although I haven't played anything from that series yet.
They're crafting-focused JRPGs where the items you prepared beforehand are the most important part of the combat, if you grind battle levels you're playing wrong. Earlier games have time management aspects while later games make the crafting more complicated instead.

There are a few entry points to start the serie as a newcomer on the Switch: Rorona, Ayesha, Sophie 2 and Marie remake.
Ryza is overrated trash between the oversimplified alchemy system and the ATB battles where you just spam the normal attack button in order to win, and I suspect the Ryza trilogy did irreperable damage to the franchise by making it mainstream.

Surprised that Stalker trilogy made it to the switch.
It wasn't mentioned in the Japanese Direct despite the trilogy appeared as a retail PS4 disc in Japan not long ago but I assume the games are rated CERO Z (18+) over there.
Weren't some things altered in the console version however? I may remember something like a removed song due of license issues.

I was vaguely familiar with it, and intending to start with Rorona when I do play it. Thanks for the info! In particular, I didn't know Ryza was so bad.

I'll keep all that in mind.

Basically there is a total of sixteen (!) Atelier games currently on Switch, divided into different universes:
  • Arland : Rorona -> Totori -> Meruru (with Lulua later introduced as a 4th title)
  • Dusk: Ayesha -> Escha & Logy -> Shallie
  • Mysterious: Sophie (Sophie 2 acts more like a spin-off storywise) -> Firis -> Lydie & Suelle
  • Ryza trilogy
  • Atelier Marie remake
  • Nelke and the Legendary Alchemists (crossover game and more aimed at simple town management)
Rorona is historically the oldest title named in the bunch (besides Marie) although the game present on Switch is based on the 2013 remake from the PS3/Vita with new contents, graphics overhaul and the QoL improvements of Meruru. Totori, the story sequel, will feel rougher by comparison as the game mechanics remain largely untouched as it originally came out in 2010.

The Atelier games aren't that long (around 30h on a first playthrough) and you're meant to replay them to reach new outcomes while the NG+ carryovers facilitate that. People shouldn't go into these games with an attitude of wanting to see everything in one go and never miss anything.

They're also your typical slice-of-life settings with different girl protagonists living in fantasy worlds. Rorona has to pay the debt of her lazy master and save the workshop by working for the kingdom, Totori wants to know the whereabouts of her adventurer mom, Ayesha wishes to save her sister trapped in a parallel dimension, etc. Each title is generally self-contained with only some returning characters within a trilogy, such as Wilbell the witch in the Dusk games:

It goes without saying that the Dusk trilogy is massively carried by Hidari's art and character designs (who also worked in one of the Fire Emblem remakes on 3DS) even if they're still pretty good games regardless. Unfortunately, neither Atelier game is translated in my native language as I would have considered them as gifts for my young relatives.

And I'm not joking about the Ryza games being hot garbage. ATB is something I don't see working well in Japanese games besides Grandia, and Atelier Ryza's was too fast paced and/or the combat encounters were too short for it to remotely shine. Nevermind it made alchemy pointless as it simply required to mash regular attacks with characters that had the shorter animations (speed stat doesn't matter in fact) in order to beat monsters with relative ease. And as a result of the simplified synthesis system and traits, you can't really do all the goofy min maxing shit you could do in past entries.

Another reason I dislike Ryza is influencing the franchise to disregard the shoujo vibes so it could gather up a more "mainstream" (aka retarded) audience.

Lol, guilty. Guess I'll have to take a more casual approach.

Again, thanks for all the info! (That artwork really is pretty.)

I was only planning to start with Rorona because I usually prefer to play series in release order, but maybe I should reconsider. Which is your favourite?

It's hard to choose a personal favorite considering I do enjoy both Arland and Dusk for their own merits.
However if you really want something that is a treat to both eyes and ears, then I do recommend the Dusk trilogy starting with Ayesha no doubt.
It's a point I somewhat forgot to mention earlier but the Atelier soundtracks are rather unique by JRPG standards.

Good to know, thanks! I'll start with that one, then, though I'm not sure when I'll get around to playing it.

And I see what you mean about the music—I like it, but it's definitely not what I would have expected.

Tetris Collection sounds cool, but where is Tetris Terror Instinct ?
It's developed by Digshital Cucklipse... when it comes out I intend to scour xitter, yt etc to find objective reports about how laggy the emulation is, then come here to sperg about it. It will get 10/10 ratings from every elderly millennial who is nostalgic for that one time he rented Tengen Tetris on NES, but I will know the truth: Arcade Archives Tetris: The Grandmaster will remain superior. Or free emulation, whatever.

The last Switch game I bought was Mario Wonder, but I may have to pause my TTYD-induced boycott and get Mario Party Jamboree, it looks really freaking good. And having a bunch of new stuff plus a few remakes of past boards and minigames is a perfect balance. Maybe I’ll wait three days so I can say I went an entire year without buying a Nintendo game.

>just pirate it
You can’t play pirated games online.

I 'm kinda interested for Tetris Battle Gaiden getting an official translation but yeah I would rather just play the original cart I own or play a normal Tetris game like Tetris with Cardcaptor Sakura.

Probably because the last two games in the series weren't very good.
The remakes or the two original 3DS games? Cause I kind of liked Dream Team. With this one, it kind of feels like it's missing something that'll make it stand out; but I wouldn't know until I see more of the dialogue.

The two original 3DS ones. I thought the Superstar Saga remake was great to be honest.

With regards to Dream Team, I liked it, but it felt like it was maybe 20-30% too long and had a lot of padding, so by the end I felt like it had really overstayed its welcome.

That may be because it's the first one not made by Alpha Dream. Don't know if anyone from Alpha Dream is working on it, but I'm guessing it's a totally different team.
