If the parents are totally dysfunctional, the state has an interest in intervening, and that means placement and other options. The welfare state might have been an option here, and more extensive social services.

Do we really expect fourteen year old boys with drug addict mothers to just...somehow make it? One doesn't have to have a policy of infinite lenience towards the criminal underclass to realize thinking that is insane and a recipe for disaster.

If I were the judge and knew everything and was completely insulated from public pressure and retaliation, I'd actually advocate for leniency here. Maybe twenty years hard labor or something. A fourteen year old (White) boy is redeemable.

I don't know what I would do as a judge in this situation.

But I do know one thing. The first time he pulled this stunt was a cry for help. Normally we are expecting that the kid had some heavy bullying at school. But this time it was different. His parents were a wreck. An assessment of his home life and parents needs to be part of the intervention plan.

And speaking of intervention plan. How the hell did the school fail that kid so hard when he barely showed up to school and skipped class all of the time? That was a clear sign that something wasn't right in the kid's life. And the school just let it slide. The school already knew the kid called in a shooting once before. Maybe they just felt safer if the kid didn't show up at all.

Right now Nick and Kayla are being forced to be mostly good when it comes to drugs and alcohol IF they want to keep the kids. Nick is coping and seething that he can't blast snow up his nose whenever he feels like it, and drink himself into a stupor every night. Without CPS intervention, this well could have been the future of one of Nick's kids.

You're right and I remember it being linked on the front page. It was called "shots fired" or "active shooter" or something. I think we might have found something about a specific shooting before anyone else did and Josh was trying to corner the market on circumventing shooter's having their internet presence scrubbed. It didn't last very long.

It didn't last long, but school shootings were in decline from schools not getting shot up with a year or two of home schooling. The Pooner Shooter was the first significant shooting post-COVID but the usefulness of the subforum just dropped off in the same way there isn't enough activity to justify a whole Brianna Wu section anymore. You've seen other small changes since then, like the split off from Internet Famous into Grift Wars & Internet Tough Guys, and the temporary Balldoverse Collapse.

As Josh puts it, he's been moderating and steering the community with a light hand for over 10 years, you can probably trust how he's been doing it and that it's both for your improved readability & his own.
