Honestly, here's an idea. If the idea is that people using forms of transport where they're more protected (cars, trucks et al yield to bikes and motorbikes yield to pedestrians) should watch out for the people who are less protected, the logical endpoint is that we should all just stand in the bike lane as a form of protest.

That would be great, but that's not how it works. How it works is, the people riding around on the toy get to act like they're 10 years old. Adults using powered grown-up machines have to protect them at all times, evens as they jauntily disregard all rules and zoom in and out of automobile roads. If the adult hits the bike or the bike hits them, the adult is an irresponsible heel who deserves to have the book thrown at them, however lawlessly the bike was acting.

If the bike hits a pedestrian however, he's a little scamp and should be cut some slack. And if the victim is an adult himself, he should have been paying more attention anyway, since as mentioned before the bike rider gets to be treated like he's 10 years old.
