They were off by a few months. The US Army marched into Rome in June 1944 rather then December. I think every American general at the time had an erect penis when they did it too, you literally could not ask for better optics then a New World Army capturing fucking Rome in time of war by force of arms.


The propaganda around it was pretty interesting too. You saw a flurry of shitty art that attempted to resemble more epic rennaissance art of the city getting sacked. But this time civilizing foreigners took the Eternal City, and though finding it in ruins brought about a new birth of hope and liberty to it.

It was all pretty shitty and mostly forgotten. Which is a shame. The US Army capturing Rome was in the grand context of history pretty epic. But of course the US Government failed to capitalize on it with some banging art.

Probably for the same reason all US Federal Court houses look like concrete refrigerators tipped over on their sides with arrow slits for windows.
