This is so fascinating to me. I remember in college my professors and their grad students were really excited about almost being done sequencing c.elegans or something and now here we are sequencing different alleles within our own genome. The databases are available for anyone to access too. Amazing.

Edit: after reading through the article a thought arose. I've been hearing a lot about generational trauma for years now, and sometimes the term "epigenetics" is included to give some scientific basis, but the truth is their understanding is about as clear as their understanding of the science behind gender, clear as mud. Anyway, I'm sure once it becomes incontrovertible that genetics determines much of who we are, muh epigenetics is going to be thrown around as an excuse for continued hand wringing over problem populations.

NCLB was the early aughts and educational standards before that time were quixotic and not consistently implemented. I mean, we managed to educate some of the brightest people before standards were standardized but there were also a lot of children left without adequate education, and many would argue there still are. I'm getting ahead of myself. Like many initiatives, the name has nothing to do with what it does. It's about tying federal funding to standards achievement, and therefore you have to have standards. NCLB does not provide for how that should happen though and so you end up with a bunch of retarded approaches making money by suckering in districts to spend money on professional development.
I think it's fine to have standards but I think it's also fine to slap people with the label of "this moron didn't meet the standards" and then help connect these tards with something they can do for society. I knew an adult retard who put salad in clamshells for the college dining hall for a living. What's wrong with that?

I sort of grew in to being a bit racist and not make excuses for people in my early 40's. After much interaction with many minorities, so it is not xenophobia. When can I expect to grow out of it?
Of course I give every individual a chance not to be a dumb arsehole, but I now recognise that some groups have way more of them than others.

I fully agree. I grew up during the 60's, 70's, etc. I've seen the transition of the African American culture first hand.

But as where byron claims it's due to genetics, I feel the need to point out that all of the factors involved point to nurture over nature.

Though to agree with my point is to admit that systemic racism actually exists.

In the case of the US -- there's still a sizeable portion of the population that sees African Americans as second class citizens, denying them the opportunities they need to thrive.

Racist cops are absolutely a factor, and so is every racist manager, executive, and terminally online forum user.

Anyway, my entire argument has been through the lense that racism is stupid, not inherently evil. Although I suppose I'm arguing for both considering all the petty squabbles over religion, skin color, and archaic tradition is distracting the average human being from giving a shit about the problems that actually impact their lives.
