I didn't intend to derail with my return, sorry.
she was the forum's best female radfem sperg
This sums it up well. She was a strong voice over in BP and I tended to agree with her opinions on animals too, her contrasting opinions to the status quo on KF were also entertaining to me.

Back on topic, I learned a bit more about backyard breeding in my time away. I'll have to make a better write up soon when I have time, but I didn't realize how popular "fluffy Frenchies" are, and they're frequently merle (or double merle.) They're sold for a shit ton of money despite the fact that they're not even French Bulldogs in terms of breed standard, similar to the "doodle" breeding that's so popular right now.

"Fluffy" French Bulldogs are either basically mutants bred on purpose, or are outcrossed with the Pekingese or long haired Chihuahua. Breeders prefer to claim that they magically came across a dog that had both the "fluffy" gene (a mutation or combination of mutations) AND a gene that gave them a merle coat and blue eyes.

If you know anything about merle genes in dogs, you'll know this is a gene to be extremely careful with. This mutation frequently causes lifelong eye issues, deafness, skin conditions, among other things. French Bulldogs are already genetic nightmares, mostly due to the breeding for aesthetics and profit, and have a laundry list of life-ruining medical problems inherent to the breed. Adding in genetic mutations like the merle gene or the long hair gene quite literally adds mutations to a genetic mutant, and then people can sell them for easily over $10,000.

Yeah I had noticed an uptick in merle frenchie pics and just shake my head when I see that. You're already fucking that dog with brachycephaly . Now you're adding severe limb deformities AND merle gene? just lol. what the fuck is wrong with these people.

They view dogs as products rather than living things.

It's a classic "non retarded person posts a reasonable and intelligent take on reddit and gets dogpiled by retards who have no idea what they're talking about". He's absolutely correct that shelters are full of garbage dogs that were put in there by garbage people. Yeah you can find a good rescue but it's sifting through mud to find gems, and more than half of that mud has significant pitbull DNA and may have a genetic predisposition to aggression that no amount of training can get rid of. And you may not even find out until something sets precious off and he bites and clamps down and refuses to let go producing a medically significant injury instead of delivering a nip who produces no serious injury (though it's still not harmless and requires immediate behavioral adjustment).

If you're single without kids or other pets by all means take a chance on rescue dogs, there are some great ones out there. But if you have kids, get a well bred dog from a family friendly breed. It is not worth permanently injuring your child so you can virtue signal that you adopted a dog in need. What most of those dogs need frankly is to be culled but our society is too weak to admit that so they just launder dogs with incurable behavioral issues through a few layers of no-kill shelters until they land in a kill shelter.
Not every region of the country is overrun with pitbulls, at least not yet. In Southern California if you adopt from a shelter, you're getting a pit mix or Chihuahua mix. It's very rare for anything else to end up in a shelter there, especially now that there are breed-specific rescues.

But in New England, at least when I was growing up there, the shelters were full of nice sheltie mixes and the odd Jack Russell. The shelter population in an area reflects the people living in that area and what dogs they have around.

How long ago were you growing up there? I mean in my area 20+ years ago you'd have a decentish mix of dogs, but now it's 80-90% pit mixes, with the rest being either badly socialized huskies or german sheperds, with an occasional traumatized lost dog of a different breed thrown in. Though the last is usually snatched up by a rescue who will charge you $300+ for the privilege of giving all of your information to them before being allowed to adopt. Maybe.

This was the middle of nowhere in NH, so I'd be very surprised if it was pits there, even now. If you're talking Boston, Providence, Springfield which seems to be under a curse, or Manchester, I can see where it'd mostly be pits bred in apartments by Latinos & Blacks trying to make a few extra bucks. But in most places - like most of Maine, NH, VT? I doubt it's pits, even now. Maine's "diverse" refugees skew Muslim, and in my experience they mostly don't like or keep dogs.

I agree that breed-specific rescues have really changed the game. I used to volunteer at a shelter in a mid-sized city and because the space was so tight they tried to offload dogs onto rescues as much as possible. Maybe that's an issue now even in Bumblefuck NH but I kind of doubt it. People spay & neuter there, and it seems to still be mostly white with a smattering of East Asian accountants and doctors. If there's much of a stray problem, let alone a stray pit problem, I'd be surprised.

ne of his dogs is named “pablo escabark” which is kinda funny.
This is funny, and if we ever get another dog I’m stealing it.
Here is a spine of a normal dog vs something like a frechy or pug.(I use those breeds as examples but this is found in many of these "premium" dog breeds)
This is horrific. On the upside I suppose the toad lines aren’t mauling people.
Fun fact, neurological changes are highly correlated with coat/skin changes. I think this was best studied with fox domestication, where foxes with a friendly temperament had dog-like coats, with different colors and patterns. I'm no geneticist, but IIRC it is theorized it has to do with the high density of nerve endings in the skin, meaning skin and nervous system mutations are closely related.
Yeah it’s neural crest cell migration. Same reason a lot of white blue eyed cats are stone deaf - the neural crest cells are absent or unable to migrate and so they can’t form the correct cells in the ear. Human analogue is waardenberg syndrome.
This thread is horrific. That canary a while back made me feel quite angry, it’s like a twisting of God’s creation. Canaries are beautiful, and this is like the dark crystal version. Hideous.
I used to know a research group who used dog genetics (just samples, they weren’t experimenting on dogs they just used existing sample dogs to x ray and take genetics from.) their aim was to understand the genetics of developmental issue like severe brachcephalic stuff, etc. I wonder if they’re aware of the toads…?
