yeah, it is common to see people who live in poor countries look at americans making $50K a year and think we must all be super rich since 50K in their country is top 1%, but they dont understand that while we make more than people in their country, we also pay tons more for rent, food, utilities, etc. that 50K doesnt go as far as they think it does.

As someone who lived in a 3rd world shithole it isnt that black and white. America has the cheapest cars, gasoline, consumer goods and lowest restrictions on those things by a mile. For instance, in brazil a car costs 3x as much as it does in america due to high import taxes. Same in costa rica plus cars dont depreciate there for some reason so a 20 year old hummer H2 costs $80,000. In america rent/real estate and food is expensive everything else is much cheaper

Everything you said is true, but I just want to say that the reason why you keep seeing third worlders saying housing and food are so "impossibly expensive in america", is because of what passes for "housing" there and what they mean when they say the word "food".
