Titan submersible communication logs were fake, investigation finds​

It has been less than a year since a frantic search was launched to find the the ill-fated Titan submersible, which it was later discovered imploded during its journey to the Titanic, killing all five of its passengers. Now, the U.S. Coast Guard has determined a communication log between the vessel and its mothership was fake. The widely-shared transcript suggested the submersible crew struggled to return to the surface.

So another billionaire wants to make the trip to the Titanic to laugh at the poors? I was going to say I probably know the technology they're using for the Triton acrylic sphere but its definitely peaked my curiosity.

However - if I saw this happening when I was walking the floor (a person half inside a heavy as fuck acrylic sphere with only a gantry & forklift holding it up) I would lose my shit. So I'm not really sure I'd trust the manufacturing/QC.

Let’s see if this one can turn a victim into a fine pink pulp before it even gets anywhere near the ocean.

(This design is at least working with the laws of physics rather than arrogantly trying to undercut them, so I expect it will be OK)

Yeah, looks pretty cramped too. I think most of the gear you would want would physically fit, but in photos I looked at I don't see it.
 
Going to get TMI here but my family is friends with a woman who works for the Navy and went on the same sub as the one that got destroyed for testing. She told my parents that it was the scariest thing she ever been on in her life. She stated that the sub couldn't go 1,300 feet let alone 13,000 feet. She told Stockton Rush to scrap the thing as he is going to get both himself and others killed. But Stockton knew better than a 50 year old naval officer and told her to shove it. Goes to show the hubris to Stockton Rush.
To be fair, I too would not have listened to a woman.
 
Holy shit, it's been a year? I clicked the thread and saw "Jun 19th" in the OP and thought something just happened with the new guy saying he's going down there again. No, it's just been a whole goddamn year since the original OceanGate thing. It doesn't even feel like it's been a month.

Listening to a little bit of his life story at the beginning you can tell he comes from a place of life-long interest in the field at least. He comes off as the type of guy Stockton tried to pass himself as.

WASHINGTON— The Coast Guard is scheduled to conduct a formal hearing starting Monday, Sept. 16, 2024, in North Charleston, South Carolina, for the Marine Board of Investigation (MBI) to consider evidence related to the loss of the Titan submersible.
The hearing is scheduled to take place at the Charleston County Council Chambers, located at 4045 Bridge View Drive, North Charleston, South Carolina. Due to capacity limitations, members of the public are encouraged to view the hearing via the livestream. Livestream information will be published closer to the convening date.
The formal hearing is scheduled to convene daily at 8:30 a.m. EDT on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2024
  • Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024
  • Friday, Sept. 20, 2024
  • Monday, Sept. 23, 2024
  • Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2024

The hearing will examine all aspects of the loss of the Titan, including pre-accident historical events, regulatory compliance, crewmember duties and qualifications, mechanical and structural systems, emergency response and the submersible industry.
The formal hearing was convened by Vice Adm. Peter W. Gautier, deputy commandant for operations. An MBI is the highest level of investigation in the Coast Guard. Upon completion of the investigation, the Board will issue a report to the Commandant with the evidence collected, the facts established, its conclusions and recommendations.
Titan was on an expedition to explore the wreck of the Titanic when contact was lost 1 hour and 47 minutes into its dive on Sunday, June 18, 2023. The Coast Guard, along with other agencies, international partners and private entities, conducted an extensive search operation. The wreckage of the Titan submersible was subsequently found on the ocean floor, approximately 300 meters off the bow of the Titanic, and all five passengers were declared deceased.
Information about the hearing, including the schedule, news releases and exhibits, will be posted to the Titan MBI website throughout the hearing at https://www.news.uscg.mil/News-by-Region/Headquarters/Titan-Submersible/.
