Cartoon Industry thread - Showcasing the Spergery of the Animation Industry

I hit an epiphany talking about this to a friend last night that the whole "no talking" rule might not just be for total concentration but to avoid talking politics/trauma-dumping with co-workers in the office, and that might be what's making the younger workers pissed off the most. Our generation just doesn't want to work swimmingly with anyone unless they can be "emotionally supportive" or allow them enough breaks to be on their phones.

Honestly, I have to question this as well because there's some serious allegations going on involving avoiding having to pay benefits to long-time workers and the like and silly shit like "no talking waaaaaah" is hurting that. Also, if this was truly a big deal, why'd it only take until now with the re-screening of Coraline doing pretty well for someone to come forward? The stuff going on about the animators who worked on Sausage Party came out pretty quickly and could be corroborated and acted upon, so either someone's peeved they're not getting royalties from it (but why would they tbh?) or they wanted that kind of timing.

So hasn't anyone commented on how Lily Simpson did a rant on transphobia in cartoons... And chose Family Guy out of all cartoons.

Family Guy has lost its charm long ago, so it's old news. Don't hold it to any standards.

Before I begin my autistic rant about Willy, I shall note that I still watch family guy when new episodes drop. I think that modern show can have good jokes in it and that is pretty much the only compliment I can give the current show.

So I unfortunately suffered through this video rant about family guy made in 2024. I think that the most insulting thing about all of Will Simpson's videos is that he will take the least charitable interpretation possible and say that it was the intended read of a piece of media. He pushes aside any positive explanations and representation in these propaganda cartoon episodes, but will still whine saying that "it isn't good enough! I want 'real' trans creators behind the scenes." It is just another person calling for more d.e.i. hires for a worst product.

So who were the "predatory men" at Stoopid Buddy Studios?

I personally don't even know considering how many people there are, but if i had to guess it could be people at the very top, like some of the writers, maybe even Matt and Seth themselves, but who knows...

But if anyone is interested in looking at more of these stories, there Instagram accounts where anonymous people detail their experiences in the industry.

Tbh I can see Seth Rogan getting cancelled for sexual harassment at some point. Those types always seem to get in trouble sooner or later.

Imagine getting hurt feelings because an animator dares to have a sign up asking for silence and to be left alone to work on stop-motion because it requires absolute concentration to set up for every single frame.
It feels a little unthinkable, from the outside, for someone to have a problem with it . People swear by the Animators Survival Kit, and a stand out part of that book is the merits of shutting the fuck up.

But internally with the animators I've visited and worked with I rarely find silence, in fact it seems there's always music ambiently playing in the background. But usually I visit places with departments sharing rooms.

At this point, every studio's gonna get called out of bad practices. That's just how the industry works, big surprise. How about just talk about how to improve those work conditions and what people can do to help try and make their overall experience working in that studio a bit fairer rather than going "UNIONIZE!" or "BOYCOTT!" for the millionth time?

God, it's like complaining about having to do so much homework in college as an engineer major. You shouldn't be surprised that being in an industry where a lot of hard work and discipline is required is gonna require... a lot of hard work and discipline.

Reminder that LAIKA post-Coraline have made less money with each release of a new movie. Kubo and Missing Link both underperformed and flopped at the box office. If Wildwood ends up being another financial disappointment, people will speculate that LAIKA be bought out by another company. Some fans talked about it since Kubo came out.
the only reason laika even stayed around this whole time was because the guy who owns the studio has a father who either runs nike or some other high position with them, either way, worth a lot

Found recordings of the reel from the 2001 public access show. The Spill before the Spill happened. It's a review of Shrek back in 2001. Back when a PG rating meant something. It is depressing to see how much Corey became a pro-censorship cunt after The Spill. The reviews also are a little time capsule of how much better race relations were before BLM and Obama. The Reel and Corey never brought up politics, or race once. Double toasted era Corey tried to cancel Quentin Tarantino for saying the N-Word.

These are wild to watch, holy shit.

It's the former CEO and co-founder of Nike who owns Laika because his son worked there as an animator. Son is the CEO of Laika now.
So they don't have to turn a profit. Put that sweatshop money to good use!

Their movies are nice and obviously technical feats but i wish the ones i watched they had better stories and a different tone. To me they lack something... maybe the narrative arc are too tight and predicable. And they really need to stop using famous actors to do the voice acting. They need to use voice-actors.
