Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

Its not an unpopular opinion but it bears repeating: it is amazing how shockingly awful callisto protocol ended up being and how oddly self aware the devs seem to be that it will never be getting a sequel.
Its base game ends with a cheap jumpscare but with a possibility our main character could escape but the DLC pulls the rug under that to reveal our main character is horrifically mangled and only barely kept alive through tech so precious info can be removed off his brain.

it is such a cheap shock value ending that it honestly one cant help but feel its born out of acceptance this is a stillborn franchise and no one will want more of it so might as well end on such a note.

This cycle has happened over and over since at least Daggerfall, probably even earlier. If you haven't been through at least one hype cycle and don't really know just how limited random/procedural generation is, the idea of a "limitless" world sounds tantalizing. People fill it in with their fantasies, then are infinitely disappointed when they play the game. Really ,I don't know how you can play one Bethesda game and not forever be skeptical of anyone's grandiose claims afterward.

Daggerfall, at the very least, tried it's damnedest with the technology they had and the development time they had. It was buggy as hell, yes, but they more or less did what they set out to do.

I like Cyberpunk 2077 a lot, but there are a lot of places you could see and feel the gaping wounds where they had clearly intended to do something, and just... never did. Some of it got fixed with patches, yes, but particularly on launch so much was just... not there.

No police AI. An open world crime game, and the police AI was literally just "spawn cops in place". It didn't' even meet the standards of GTA3.
No metro system despite obviously having the infrastructure for it.
No player customization post-character creation, despite that being virtually standard in games these days... and it's particularly an egregious absence in a cyberpunk game.
Gameplay mechanics that were introduced but only used a handful of times, like the Braindance system.

There are other things, but that's a few of the more egregious.

Not only this, but it was hyped up as a "spiritual successor to Dead Space" and yet wound up being inferior to a remake of the original Dead Space, which has completely reignited the Dead Space fanbase and made people beg for a remake of Dead Space 2 just like this one.
And despite what some might try to say, the only thing that would have "saved" Callisto Protocol would have been a complete redesign from the ground up, because Callisto's combat is awful, the levels just aren't interesting to play through, the monster design is generic and boring, and the story was gutted to make it tie into PUBG. This game is literally just Crysis 2.0. in that it has only one thing going for it, and that's the graphical fidelity.

At least the developers are self aware and humble enough to recognize that this game is a failure and accepted their loss with some dignity and grace.

CODizing Crysis 2 was just bullshit. Crysis and Warhead were really fun to play in a variety of ways. There actual tactical options available, not just shitty weapon the game is deliberately trying to get you to use. And of course, those screeching Best Koreans.

I didn't even understand Cyberpunk's hype. It seemed like people were expecting they were going to be able to disconnect from reality and live inside a video game instead, and like, that couldn't be right. Hadn't people played video games before?
Remember this happening with Skyrim.
There wasn't much hype for the game until after Witcher 3 came out. CD Projekt was a niche PC developer prior to Witcher 3. Unless you were into RPGs or were a graphics whore, you probably only knew about Witcher 2 because Obama was given a copy of it in 2011.
I liked Knack.
Found Dunkey's account.

Isn't that how Dead Space 1 ended though? Iirc the end of the first game Issac gets into his ship. As he flies away, he hears a sound behind him. And a monster with a woman's face jumps out with a cut to black.

Yes, but the big difference is that both DS1 and CP's base ending leave it ambiguious if our main character escaped or not. DS2 does confirm Issac survived and that jumpscare sort of becomes a plot point in the sequel while CP's DLC ending just has our lead just horrifically torn apart off screen and we were just controlling his dying thoughts.

DS1's ending was terrifying as you are just left in the credits with a "WTF just happened?"
CP's DLC ending just makes you be like "I spent money on this?"

It does help DS1 was a far more engaging experience than CP's.

That wasn't just a monster with a woman's face, that was his dead girlfriend as a monstrous hallucination.

MandaloreGaming made two videos on both the Dead Space Remake and Callisto Protocol, and I heartily recommend watching them both in that order. He does a great job highlighting where Callisto Protocol went wrong, and if you're watching his Dead Space video(s) as well, it provides a nice contrast.

Now, personally, my headcanon is a "first" playthrough of DSR is how Isaac thinks he sounds...and NG+ is how Isaac actually sounds. And the NG+ ending had better be the one they use as a starting-off for a Dead Space 2 remake.

Board/puzzle games have a place in the video game market as a means to unwind and strengthen your brain. Hell, I am okay with an easy mode in games so that somebody COULD enjoy a story like reading a book or watching a movie.
Puzzle games for little girls where cute anime characters match colored blocks are more hardcore than "hardcore" games

No grind2win equipment or meta cheese to hide behind in Puyo Puyo PvP, casuals

Cynthia is the most overrated trainer in the Pokémon franchise and possibly the most overrated character in video game history. If it weren't for the waifu factor and the fact she ambushes you in BW she'd be as forgettable as Unova's champion.
Her design is very generic, if you gotta pick a blonde Pokemon waifu there's Karen.

cynthia as a character is carried entirely by having probably the sickest "encounter" music in the series, a really good battle theme, and a weirdly well-optimized team which, to be fair, is a lot more than most pokemon characters get. i was explaining to someone in irl fairly recently who doesn't know anything about pokemon how, yeah, this crazy dramatic high-tempo music is for a character that shows up like three times and does/says literally nothing interesting

Everyone knows Steve Stone is where is at. That Metagross is a menace.

MandaloreGaming
I guess this is more of an unpopular opinion about Youtubers than games, but Mandalore gaming is hugely overrated. His Mystery of the Druids and Limbo of the Lost videos were great, but the memes that have come from them are a bit grating. It's a shame that games like Mechanicus and Brigador are now tied to him. I want to say he supported a cancellation/metoo attempt that turned out to be bogus, but given that people still complain about the misdeeds of reviewers like Angry Joe, JonTron, and Linkara despite their dramas being less bad, I assume it panned out fine or I remember wrong.

Dead Space Remake
Didn't the remake change a bunch of stuff? Removing boobs from female characters, race swapping white men in propaganda posters, and gender neutral bathrooms? I didn't know they changed other things.

Isn't she mostly remembered for being surprisingly difficult to beat for the game's target audience? I remember having trouble with her in Diamond as a kid.

Agatha is the one with blonde hair. Karen has silver hair. Also, Agatha is old enough to be Red's grandma.

I have no idea about any of this, but I'll assume it's wrong.

No.

Karen looked like a blonde in the original games though (technical limitations of the Game Boy Color, I guess), I think she looks way better that way. Agatha looks old enough to be Red's grandma's grandma lmao.

Are there any Japanese franchises or properties ruined by Westerners? Since Japanese and Western gameplay styles are wildly different, I figured there must be a ton of examples cause japs pawn off properties a lot. The only example I can think of is dead rising cause the first game was uniquely Japanese in how it played but became standard zombie third person shooter crap.

The fanbase obsessing over Cynthia, while they trash talk Diantha and consider her forgettable, is maddening. Granted, the way that she (ANIME SPOILER) got curbstomped hard by Leon didn't help matters either, and maybe that was done to show that even the staff don't like her. And maybe the Diantha dislike was also because some people though X and Y were forgettable, with some parts of the game feeling unfinished. And yet, X and Y still feel more like complete games, than the Nintendo Switch mainline ones.
