I don't understand why it's wrong that the antagonists are portrayed as pedophiles and zoophiles. Aren't they supposed to be awful people anyway since they are serial killers? The series does not attempt to make them sympathetic or tragic, just really evil people doing fucked up stuff.

Zoomers have an unhealthy obsession with the villain being the "REAL GOOD GUY!!!" and the heroes all being unhinged corrupt psychopaths. They tend to always project onto the antagonist of a story, which is why Urbanspook freaks them out so much. They can't comprehend fictional antagonists being horrific monsters because they see them on some level to be "literally me". And so they assume that the creator must be some kind of fucked up lunatic with a mountain of skeletons in his closet.

I'm shocked I haven't really seen this attitude directed towards similar works like Blood Meridian.

I really really doubt he uses AI, he has an Instagram account and he's been posting since 2015. You can see his art style evolution and his "current" art style is from at least 2021. Remember that AI back then just did abstract shitposts at best.

I am a bit surprised with how much the True Crime and Creepy Pasta/Analog Horror communities intertwine that they even would get upset about fictional characters doing the shit real life killers do. This is interesting timing because I just watched a bunch of these videos last night with my girlfriend lol

I think his work is just...okay, it's really repetitive and ironically the most interesting parts of it are when he breaks away from "this person died and the police found this painting oooh". His series is gruesome and scary no doubt but it's also kind of lacking teeth, in that there's nothing introspective or psychological about it. It's just bad stuff happening. There's no real characters besides the painter, who doesn't seem to have any motivation beyond killing people.

I think the series would actually work better if it was only paintings and no videos. Paintings in galleries already have descriptions that provide context for them, idk why this series has to be in video format at all if it doesn't do anything with the medium besides text on a screen and scary music.

The "drama" surrounding him seems to be predicated by people who already live for drama, because every thing on the face of the earth must have a cancel fandom run by children, this is sadly the new way of things. There's nothing worth getting mad at but spook could also learn to take criticism a little better.

To elaborate on my points.

1. Wendi likes the MC because he has dysmorphopobia and is a former Sunday school teacher. The MC appeals to what he likes and calls Kister 'the next Spielberg'.
2. Wendi has produced roughly the equivalent of 2 days worth of content on the MC alone, holding it as the pinnacle of analog, along an interview with Kister and a stream viewing another analog.
3. Wendi joins forces with Kister trying to cancel US. Considering other horror he likes and promotes he looks like a massive pushover being bullied by his bf into not allowing another kid to sit at their table during lunchtime.
4. Kister alters the MC after post-nut clarity hits that he is just as bad as US by taking out the part of the instructional video telling people to kill themselves if an alternate is nearby.

For the record, The Painter is formulaic shit. I literally wrote as such months ago.

While I'm not really a fan of The Painter, it's not because I'm against Urban's brand of horror - rather, I think it's a bit of a let-down because of its weak writing and strange inconsistencies that take the suspension of disbelief away, all stuff I've talked about on the main internet horror thread. That being said, some of the recent episodes have had some genuinely excellent moments, such as the 911 call in "Family" - I don't know anything about the voice actress, but she absolutely nailed conveying the terror you'd expect a trapped victim to be feeling in a situation with absolutely no way out.

I'm very much against this brand of 'safe horror' that's emerged over the last few years taking over the genre as a whole. While there's definitely a place for it among all the other subgenres, one of the Horror genre's greatest achievements is its ability to be subversive; take that away, and it loses one of the biggest things that made it unique.

People always overlook the Painter and the masked killer is inspired by real world serial killers, Ottis Toole and Henry Lee Lucas. Both were involved in random killings and child sex crimes together across Florida and the American South. Ottis Toole sent a letter to the future host of America Most wanted to try to blackmail him with the whereabouts of his son, Adam Walsh's bones.( The police only recovered his head) With a letter where Ottis confesses to raping and killing Adam Walsh with a machete. I find the analog horror community criticizing Urbanspooks writing for being over the top and shocking. Ignore the fact that real life serial killers are over the top and just as brutal as the painting killers. Never mind, he made the only analog horror series with zero supernatural and science fiction elements, which makes him stand out more than the gore.

I wish The Painter took this inspiration and made a really disturbing but creative thing with it that helps people with awareness about pedophilia and child murder and makes the acts much more impactful to the story and viewers, akin to the movie The Black Phone, the game series Lacey and the game Dreaming Mary, than simply a PowerPoint presentation.

Also this reminds me of Tsutomu Miyazaki, who raped, murdered and mutilated little girls, then teased their parents about it. Same thing with Albert Fish, who did the same stuff to little children, and also cooked and ate their corpses. The Vocaloid songs Crushed Mary and Willows of Wysteria did amazing and creative jobs with those two cases that emphasized the horror, pain and suffering of the victims, and the evilness of the killers. They did not simply spoonfeed you information within PowerPoint slides and treat the viewer like an idiot, they actually gave the viewer an opportunity to listen, analyze the lyrics and come to the horrifying conclusions about them.
