4 inch or higher. 4 inch barrel with revolver rounds in general is a pretty fair balance, be it 38 specialor 44 magnum. 6 inch if you're feeling spicy and want extra velocity in exchange for weight.

There's always .500 S&W. Since you're not going after African big game, you want more expansion than penetration, so maybe some JHP loads?

A debilitating hit to the central nervous system is the one shot solution. Any other hits simply start a timer for the target to bleed out enough to stop fighting. As long as the round is sufficient to penetrate enough to hit the vitals, then it will do the job. You have to be realistic in the probability you will have to shoot the target multiple times to get the desired effect, even if you are using a more powerful round, and consider how the recoil of the larger round will affect follow up shots.

One way people train to hit a large moving target (mostly bears but can apply to chimps too) is to rig up one of those big plastic barrels on top of a hill, stand at the foot of the hill in its path, and then release the barrel so it rolls towards you. Then try to put a few rounds in the barrel before it gets to you.

So... the ASM survived the defensive ammo gauntlet. 20 of each, Winchester defender, grizzly +p hardcast, hornady leverevolution, critical defense, and winchester bear loads. Filmed was 5 of the grizzlies. As an aside. Don't aim with a camera if you are going for accuracy.

How are those Winchester Bear Loads? I remember seeing them when they came out and being unimpressed. The velocity and bullet weight advertised made it seem like they were sticking to SAAMI standards. In .45 colt that doesn’t seem like something I would want to use on a bear.

It's not ideal for follow up shots, but with training that can still be mitigated. Cost of ammo for training is another factor... I'd personally go for a 10mm semi-auto than a big bore revolver. If it's good enough for bear defense, it's good enough for a chimp. You also get better round capacity with 10mm.

I mean. They seemed closer to cowboy loads than defensive ammo. I don't have a bear to test on, but I can get a meat target next week to test on and see what happens.

I'll never forget the one time, at least 10 years ago, I was browsing my local Armslist and I saw a S&W 500 for sale, "only fired once."

the vast majority of off the shelf .45 colt is "cowbot loads". they are loaded light so they won't blow up a blackpowder colt. modern SAA's can take a more than SAAMI standard pressures. a proper standard pressure .45 colt defensive loading will run 1,000-1,100FPS and ~5-550 ft lbs and are safe in any smokeless rated .45 colt.

The old military loading of 40grains FFG black powder w/ a 255gr LRN mimics this performance, and is safe in any .45 colt ever made, assuming its in good condition. This is my favorite load. its got enough pressure to expand the case and seal the chamber meaning the BP foulding is containted to the barrel, front of the cylinder and topstrap. its very easy to load. no chance in hell you can double charge with blackpowder. all smokeless powders leave enough room to atleast double charge if not triple charge due to the .45's massive case.

Looks like the government has banned the sale of all optic anti-reflection devices through a patent secrecy order, claiming "national security concerns". They're just 3D printed honeycombs that mount in front of your optic to get rid of your sight's glint. I had no idea that they were able to do this, I wonder if the company is protected by the 1st amendment if they just released the files for them or if the government would shoot all their dogs. I am sure someone will have their own version up on fosscad by the end of the month. They aren't illegal to own or make, just illegal to sell apparently.

they are illegal to sell/export as complete units, or for the technical data to be exported where previously they were not. this will have no effect inside the US other than for people who want to make them and try to export them or make the technical data public. with china, russia, iran, and others moving towards war with the US in various ways, modern laser aiming tools and optics are becoming more common. they aren't in ITAR because it takes a while to get added to that (department of state). whereas the patent office is part of the executive branch under the department of commerce and receives marching order directly from the executive.

i was mailed a copy of a similar letter for other items that are borderline innocuous in the US, but that the USG doesn't want exported without their direct approval.
