Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

Graphics stopped progressing after this game. Most games now can't even come close and it was released half a century ago.

RDR2 combined fidelity with good art direction and aesthetics. The end result was a gorgeous cowboy simulator.

But some in this thread will still complain that the FPS isn't high enough.
Yes. There's a PC port that proves that it can handle a higher frame rate. The Xbox Series X and PS5 is more powerful than the Xbox One/PS4; there's no reason why there shouldn't be a 60fps patch for those versions. Don't forget that R* practically abandoned RDRII a couple years after launch for GTA Online.

I'm impressed with RDRII's graphic fidelity and character models. It's practically lifelike.

This brings up my contempt for Rockstar Games as a company. They make great products, but they are perfectionists at the expense of their workforce. Here's one example of R* turnover around the PS2 era. They expect to make ALL the money, but technological limitations and overindulge hold them back from the positive fervor they deserve with their art.

I play it on PC myself, and I don't understand why they didn't patch it for 60FPS from the get go.

Because GTO is where R* makes the majority of their money, so why would they offer a remake of Undead Nightmare in RDR2's engine, or some other DLC that would have added a lot more content to the game, when they can keep milking GTO?

It's a real shame, because Undead Nightmare would have been terrifying in RDR2's engine, given how scary the Nite Folk and the Skinners are at night already.

R* seems to be the opposite of Valve, if this blog post is anything to go by. Valve's too hands-off, R8 is too micromanaged.

Thread tax: GTA6 might "sell well", but it will be the game that finally starts to sink R*. And I don't think that it's even going to sell that well as I don't really see that much hype for it.

Rockstar doesn't design their games for over 30 FPS.

I'm pretty sure RAGE itself can't render cloth like physics over 30 fps. That's why the flags, inflatable tube men and banners move weird and the flags on the back of hte monster trucks glitch the fuck out when you play 60+FPS on GTA V on PC.

With RDR2, I noticed that womens dresses moved weird in certain cutscenes, so I'd assume it's something they don't want to work on and figure to release a patch would possibly highlight the effect.

I remember talking about having higher frame rates can have unintended side effects depending on the engine framework. Is there a difference with RDR2 with 30 from 60fps outside of graphical oddities?

Everything Rockstar Games is overrated :smug:
State of Emergency could've been a sleeper hit if R* refined its foundation.

The only thing I ever noticed are the weird cloth physics. I played through most of the game on PC at 60FPS and never hit anything gameplay wise that felt broken.

I feel if there was anything like how GTA IV's final mission breaks and stuff, it'd probably be reported on.

I'm sure you heard this before, but game journos thought GTA III was going to be a bomb and that State of Emergency was going to be their big title back at E3 2001.

Is there anyone left that thinks highly of Bethesda? It's obviously Rockstar with their games where you spend 50% of the playtime driving from one mission marker to the other
If you don't like driving recklessly for its own sake, you probably won't like Grand Theft Auto games. It's like complaining about how much web-slinging traversal there is in a Spider-Man game.

But doesn't it feel like GTA 5 is spread out too way too much compared to earlier games? The repetition seems to just get worse with every release

Devil May Cry reboot is the best example, but you could argue westernization has poisoned just about every major jap franchise.
I'm not so sure. Mario, Final Fantasy, Zelda, Metroid, these Jap franchises still stand strong and proud.

The most you can say about westernization with Mario is that Peach was a girlboss in the movie and the Japs hated that, but the Japs had their own anime Mario movie a long time ago. Final Fantasy, Metroid, and Zelda still have stories and characterizations that favor the Jap view of things over the western view of things. Especially Other M which was big in Japan but hated in the States.

Technically 1 and 2 are open world games as well, they just have a top down view rather than a 3rd person over the shoulder camera.
True, but it opened the floodgates in 3D. 2D open world dates back pretty far, to old ass western RPGs.

Best Nintendo consoles to date have to be the N64, GameCube, DS and the Switch.
If I'm being objective, GBA deserves to be there over N64.

Just looks like another ugly photorealistic western game to be, a technical marvel that you don't really want to look at.

Movie Peach isn't the only issue, Nintendo seems to be sunsetting Peach's damsel-in-distress role, and the tonal shift started in Odyssey with her rejecting Mario and going off to explore the world independently in post-game.

Final Fantasy is woke, admittedly moreso in localization than the original Japanese (look in the localization thread if you haven't), but it's still there.

Metroid is in a relatively good position. Dread did away with the alternate endings tradition of Samus being in various states of undress though, not exactly a good sign, but there's very little they can do to ruin Metroid beyond toning down the sexuality, thankfully. Worst case is they make her a tranny like one of the original guys from the Metroid team said she was, but Nintendo isn't THAT far gone yet.

Zelda has been pretty safe so far, but him dressing in drag several times ever since TFH is a little sus, and I'm not sure about the role reversal in the upcoming EoW, plus I'm pretty damn sure the Zelda film is going to be a nightmare. At the moment Zelda is fine, but things very well may go to hell soon.

To be fair, playable Peach was a thing even in SMB2. But yes, that is a noticeable trend.

Final Fantasy isn't that woke. Otherwise their women would look uglier. The Japanese equivalent of Feminism is Lightning kicking the crap out of Bhunivelze and Barthandelus, which isn't the same as the western equivalent of feminism, which is sticking Concord with round, fat women in armor.

Dread also made it so that Samus is great because of a male Chozo donating his DNA to her. So at the end, she is still an extension of the patriarchy. She even chooses to work with the one good Chozo who was still alive-before he died.

I have faith that they won't fall off the deep edge. Zelda is a very traditional series, with a very feminine princess and a traditional male lead. Even the games where you control Zelda, she doesn't come off as standoffish or annoying.

Yeah, and I have no problem with it here and there, though I'd prefer her to just get her own adventures for the most part, and stay kidnapped in the mainline games. It's like Bowser being the main villain, Tatanga and Wario were fun new villains, but at the end of the day I want Bowser to be the main villain in most games.

I'm still not too concerned yet, once we see what the next mainline 3D Mario does with Peach we'll know whether they totally abandoned her original role or not.

Final Fantasy isn't that woke.
It's not the worst case out there, but it's significant. We can't set the bar at Concord and give everything else a pass, that's what I see happening, the Overton window in media shifting. At this rate by time PS6 is out we'll think TLOU2 was far-right propaganda in the wake of Dustborn 3.

That's a little bit of a reach, just seems like a normal thing, not intentional pro-patriarchy social commentary. On the other hand, what I mentioned is certainly an intentional direction the series is moving in. But again, it ain't that big of a deal, I guess.

I don't think it'll ever be comically woke, we won't be getting a black trans Link or gay romance with Ganondorf, but I can see them leaning into Wokeism a little quite easily. We'd hear "Zelda isn't that woke" if they just had a nonbinary secondary character who everyone casually refers to as they/them. I can already see it in my mind's eye, patern recognition is like a superpower these days.

im 99% certain they did, Wonder was a test-bed of sorts, Nintendo really isn't woke (most Japanese companies aren't) but they are absolutely willing to cash-in on Women being able to play as her, even if socially left political ideas become less obvious in the general industry in a few years, theres always going to be things like that, people have to remember that the leadership of these companies literally dont give a shit what we think and don't want consumers input.
