While we may have a dedicated Sega thread, I wanted a place to sperg specifically about their consoles. Let’s talk hardware, hacking, history, Sega console games, emulation, news, how much scalpers fucking suck, anything goes.

For me, the Dreamcast will forever be held in my heart as the greatest console ever made, however I have a particular soft spot for the Sega Saturn, which unfortunately flopped and had limited presence in North America; as such, many Sega Saturn games that were translated into English are now worth hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars.

Because of its overly-complicated architecture that including two CPU’s, eight processors, and custom graphics chips, many game developers didn’t bother to create ports for it, and its made emulation even trickier. There isn’t technical information on the Saturn for emulator developers to work with, so reverse engineering is mainly how it’s done. While still not perfect, Mednafen has made some amazing strides with it for the last decade. It’s getting the ROM’s that are another challenge. ;3

Alright, enough about me. 😅 I’m curious to hear from other Farmers about the topic of Sega consoles.

It's very disrespectful of you to completely ignore what is the actual best piece of Sega machinery: The Golden 007 Pinball machine from 1996.

Before anyone argues this is not a console, let me provide you with the following evidence that proves without a shadow of a doubt this is better than a Dreamcast:
DreamcastGoldenEye 007 Pinball machine
Can you play it in your house?YesYes
Is it a game?YesYes
Is it a device made by Sega?YesYes
Does it have an official gun controller with a trigger you have to pull to advance the game?NoYes

Well, I like the Sega Dreamcast. I'm not sure about homebrew or modding, I remember someone getting a port of GTA 3 on there. But I'm not sure.

Whenever I adjust the antenna out cable on my Genesis to try and reduce interference, it can freeze up the console. 🤨

(not much of a fan of the hedgehog games BTW)

I liked Sega systems, not as much as Nintendo or PlayStation in their respective generations, but an extremely solid 2nd or 3rd just as much worth playing.

Saturn and Dreamcast are two systems with the most unplayed games I'm interested in eventually playing aside from PS2. There's so much interesting stuff, like Burning Rangers and Blue Stinger.

There are optical drive emulators available for the Dreamcast. You can throw your games on a SD card and play them on the real hardware. I nearly bought one last year, I see them on Ebay occasionally for like $75.

You might be getting a bad ground, or some oxidation on the connector causing RF fuckery. Try hitting it with some Deoxit or contact cleaner. Barring that, you may have a loose solder joint.

Loved my dreamcast. I miss it.

I first played Sonic R on PC, come to find years later it was originally released for the saturn. There was a Pocahontas game for either saturn or the genesis that looked interesting. Kind of wish it was included in the aladdin/lion king compilation.

bad ground
What's that?

The connector on the cable I connect to the antenna out port doesn't have any rust, but it does look a little dull or not as shiny. The console port itself looks OK from the outside anyway. The console works fine as long as I don't touch that cable while it's on.

Pretty sure Pocahontas was Genesis, it's one of the system's best looking games from a technical standpoint.

So you could have grime or oxidation if it's dull looking. Give it a good clean and see if it helps any.

If the jacket of the cable is frayed, or where the outer part of the jack solders on to the board is loose, it can cause a bad ground. Long story short, this could cause the voltage to get momentarily wacky, crashing your system. There's other stuff that can cause this as well.

I've had a GDEMU in my old dreamcast for years at this point and despite people telling me I need a special PSU for it, I've never had hardware problems. Is it really necessary?

Genesis/MegaDrive was pretty easy to make ass-music with, but when someone actually knew how to make good shit with the FM chip, it completely MOGS anything that ever came out of the SNES' speakers.
Also if your only frame of reference for good Genesis music is sonic shit, you're a soy nigga (and possibly a tranny)

It's not even close tbh

I see your gun controller pinball machine and raise you a carpet munching contest (also courtesy of Sega):

The Dreamcast hardware actually survived in the arcades way past the console's demise. They were still making arcade games with it up to the late 2000's. Flycast also supports them and they work pretty well. Some Atomiswave games were actually converted back to Dreamcast by fans (not possible with Naomi 1 or 2 because they are more advanced)

I had a megadrive when I was kid, god I loved that thing, used to play Golden axe and Streets of rage, all the time. Also hot take, columns is better than Tetris and the music absolutely slapped.

I grew up on the Sega Genesis, and had family members that had the Sega Genesis (but they only had sports games and a racer or two, including Sewer Shark for the Sega CD). So that console is a pretty big part of my life, especially since I was lucky enough to have a Sega Channel as well so that I wouldn't have to bug my parents about going to Blockbuster all the time.

I also had the GameGear, and was pretty much glued to that whenever I was out in the car with my parents. I also sometimes played it in the house when I was just in the mood for it, specifically Sonic Drift 2, which was a fun-as-hell racer.

Eventually I wound up getting the Saturn when people started to not give a shit about it anymore. $50 bucks at a place called MicroCenter (no not that one), which was essentially another FuncoLand. Got Virtua Fighter 2 for it, and eventually wound up getting other games (mostly fighters, but a couple platforms as well). I loved the built-in CD player interface, it was WAY better than the PS1's boring plain-looking one. It even allowed you to fuck with the songs via the settings (e.g. pitch-shift). Never owned a Sonic game for it though, but only because I already had 3D blast for Win95, and didn't find out about "R" until years later when it came out for PC as well. As an adult, I've come to appreciate the Saturn a lot more, mainly because it was an odd duck that did things differently but also had a bunch of hidden gems that nobody seems to care about, at least outside of Japan. I never cared that the graphics looked "jpeg compressed" choppy on some games (especially the FMV's, which I'll admit were crisprer on the PS1), I never cared that the PS1 could do 3D better than the Saturn... my thing was always about how fun the game was, and with the Saturn I was, and still am, very satisfied in that category.

The Dreamcast I completely skipped out on, but now that i can emulate it fine via FlyCast Dojo, I plan on checking out the stuff i missed out on.
