Correct me if I'm wrong, but the warheads themselves have been upkept. This was actually a thing. The US government forgot how to make an aerogel interstage material and spent a ton of money in the 2000's to reverse engineer it. This was a result of US classification systems working to a point of backfire: everyone who knew how the warheads worked died off and the Department of Energy hid the information so well that, when the original engineers died, the US no longer knew how to build the warheads.

I know for a fact that the US employs aerogel engineers now for this very reason. A lot of them work in Ohio.
