Zoomers have an unhealthy obsession with the villain being the "REAL GOOD GUY!!!" and the heroes all being unhinged corrupt psychopaths. They tend to always project onto the antagonist of a story, which is why Urbanspook freaks them out so much. They can't comprehend fictional antagonists being horrific monsters because they see them on some level to be "literally me". And so they assume that the creator must be some kind of fucked up lunatic with a mountain of skeletons in his closet.

I'm shocked I haven't really seen this attitude directed towards similar works like Blood Meridian.

People pretend to like it. It is literally a meme. I have yet to meet someone that thinks it's genuinely good.

And while there is horror stuff that is just meant to be fun and not intellectual stuff... That doesn't mean those get to treat the viewer like a moron, which in my opinion is The Painter's biggest problem. It has no mystery. Also, some Analog Horror series also have this problem with being boring PowerPoint slides. At least Gemini Home Entertainment gets a pass because it is supposed to be that way, as it is supposed to be a series of 1980's low-budget educational series.

I agree, I don't love it. The main draw for me is the paintings but I said that stuff because I get why people do like it, namely the shock-jock factor.
For me, it's just interesting to see the art of any given new episode, but that's it.

Pastra has maybe 2 good videos and the rest are for edgy creepypasta kids. So his opinion means nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Especially since usually with these arguments there's always the insinuation that writing or depicting such content 'normalizes' it and thus could make people and eventually society as a whole more likely to accept it or act it out themselves, but people have written about dark, taboo topics for centuries. The fact alone that people are still arguing about it should be proof enough that consuming media like that doesn't make civilized society instantly think that murder/rape/etc is completely normal and socially acceptable.

Because the story doesn't require interpretation, the horror comes from how the viewer tries to imagine and rationalize the kind of monstrous, supernatural cruelty that would motivate the painter(s). It's trying to find that balance between what most people would find soul-chillingly disturbing and insultingly gratuitous, and that line can be different for a lot of people. For some, harming children is already a step too far.

See I don't think it's a lack of tact or a matter of being edgy, (it's no more gruesome than the Amnesia series) I think the intent is to impress on the viewer that these killers are sadistic beyond reason and that there's no escape, which triggers a number of primal fears. The antagonist as a concept is psychologically violating, putting this horrific imagery and these ideas into people's heads so I understand why some people find that callous and trashy, and others find it refreshingly simple.

Thing is, it's not all just text and goofy paintings. The 911 call at the end of Family was actually quite genuinely disturbing. I wish it was more of that, and less of this.

Your English Teacher tier rationalisation as to why “Muh YouTube series with le evil bad guy” is good bores me and only makes me question you as a person.

Disturbing villains can be done yes, but UrbanSPOOK’s take is less multi dimensional and more just him taking the ideals of the Crossed comic series (Copious brutality and sexual assault) and unnecessarily translating it into a medium that was innately built off the back of tastefulness and simplicity.

There’s a reason people enjoy Local58 or Gemini Home Entertainment, and it’s that they do their villains tastefully. Even then, villains don’t just outright tell you things like “[insert villain here] raped a hospital of infants and strung their entrails into nooses in which they hung the nurses at the hospital here’s a photo of the aftermath” - It has never happened because it both borderlines an author outing their fantasies, and it’s just fucking unnecessary and gay.

Fictional Media is escapism. We don’t need Mr. I-Write-Borderline-Snuff and his merry band of clones over here trying to make a bunch of scary fake true crime videos. There’s a reason true crime happens on the History Channel.
