The funny thing is, the one 343-era Halo product that is the most faithful to the original games, outside of the MCC which are just remasters, is the Fireteam Raven arcade game. You play as four ODST side bitches who work to fight the Covenant on the side and ensure the Chief succeeds, and the story takes place in Halo 1. The art style sticks to the classic Halo trilogy for the most part. The four side bitches sacrifice themselves to distract the Covenant and the Flood so that Chief in the Pillar of Autumn will have less enemies to deal with, and he successfully blows up the Autumn, which destroys Installation 04, killing Covies, the Flood, the four side bitches, and ending the story.
The game captures the spirit of Halo-good soldiers, up against insurmountable odds, with little chance of survival, but they fight on anyways knowing that it contributes to the final victory of humanity. Not to mention they used the art style of the classic Halo series, which adds to the flavor of the Halo aesthetic.
Who'd have thought that the one new game made in the 343 era that would capture the spirit of Halo the most is the fucking arcade tie-in game?

That's the problem. Microsoft somehow got it into their skulls to turn against the user-friendly culture of Halo and instead trying to make Halo into something that it is not. 343 Industries multiplied the problem by turning Halo away from its roots and doubling-down on telling the fans to go to hell. Even to this day, there are people who complain of hijinks and glitches with the MCC, and Infinite is basically treading water. Microsoft and 343 still act like they're on top of the world, when in reality, they'd be lucky if they got Nintendo's scraps. Its almost like no one enforces Ex post facto laws and Statues of limitations anymore. #metoo.
I'd argue it wasn't even the games. It was the generally friendly playerbase that made halo what it was and turned online gaming into the mainstream. I'm talking Halo 3 with all the fun forge maps and custom lobbies that was quite diligent about quietly banning cheaters consoles. At least to where I never encountered any blatant ones and was one of the few games where I actually did make long term friends playing.
Versus the gaming "communities" post-Reach that by design, seem to do nothing but breed infighting and enable self centered pricks who need an asskicking to hide behind a banhammer and an ivory tower.
