There's a good chance Crooks wasn't actually aiming at Trump's head. I won't bore the non-gun-autists, but there's a high chance a fuck up like Crooks zeroed his rifle at 25 yards, which is a common max distance for indoor ranges. That would mean (generally speaking) his bullet would hit on the point of aim if the target is 25 yards away.

However, because of how ballistics works, if you're aiming at a target ~150 yards away with a 25-yard zero, your bullet will be around 10 inches high. So if Crooks was aiming at Trump's chest and didn't account for ballistics, the shot would end up somewhere around Trump's ear.

Look I'm not going to claim to be an expert in the art of assassination but high profile targets are ironically not desirable for them. All the people who ended up dead around hilldog were low profile people the American public doesn't know about. Most importantly they died (relatively) inconspicuously. There was enough plausible deniability to write it off as accidents or robbery's or what have you. Also nobody really wanted to dig or pull at threads.

Shooting someone in public in full view of camuras while There's bodyguards is practically suicidal. I could very well be wrong but unless you believe in a second shooter for the Kennedy's nobody has taken a shot at the president and escaped death or capture.
