You can trust a bear to be a threat. You can prepare to try and avoid a bear. If you're lucky you might be able to scare it off (depending on the bear; black bears are especially cowardly). But a man in the woods is an unknown quantity, and unlike a bear a man can pretend not to be a threat to get your guard down. He's as likely to be Buffalo Bill as he is to be a helpful stranger.
