Sorry, I know this is a super old post. Wanted to reply anyway. Not just an Amerimutt thing tbh.
SSRIs are also incredibly common in Europe. It’s basically any GP’s go to pill, whenever someone shows up with the mildest of anxiety, stress, depression, etc.
“I’m anxious because school is over soon and I don’t know what to do. I keep myself awake at nights about it, and don’t have energy in the daytime…”
“Ok, have some Prozac!”
It’s pretty wild how popular they are, considering their efficacy is far from a sure thing, and the theory of how they work has never been proven.
Bit of a tmi-
I do take them for crippling anxiety and depression, which triggered after my mom died and hasn't gone away in 5 years despite therapy.
Most people think of hard core ssris but most are like Welbutrin, zoloft, or buproprion, they don't severely impact you, just give a nudge (at least in my experience) and take 2 years to work at max efficiency because it needs to build up.
I think the heavy SSRI's are given in more major cities? But I could be wrong. Some women also play up their symptoms for xannies or the other harder stuff so they don't have to feel anything about their shitty life.
Still, I agree it's given too freely. Mine was a last resort and a miracle for me, but it's still a drug and effects your brain and body in a lot of ways.
Edit: I should add that it gave me the energy and willpower to change my diet, work out, and figure out my shit. Those were the biggest help, though I tried getting off them and immediately fell into that dark hole again, so looks like these are permanant for me.
