It’s actually very common for students to flunk out only a few weeks into a semester. Week Three is the crucible for a lot of them. Most colleges actually need the tuition revenue and won’t fail (or permit professors to fail) students this early, but if she’s not attending class, advising will be contacting her to “check in.” Even if her paperwork is snafued, she still needs to make the effort to attend class, which it doesn‘t sound like she’s doing. NYU is literally just a bank to her.

Disability studies is more commonly something that a person may specialize in for graduate study, where degrees and programs of study are much more specialized. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it useless; she could get a decent job as a disability advocate, but I do wonder about whether she’s actually capable of holding down an adult job. She doesn’t appear to have any actual career goals besides being a content creator and (I suspect) a fetish-speciality sex worker like our dear Rose. She’s enrolled in a good school that has a lot of academic resources, but she doesn’t seem interested in them - she only mentions sleeping in the library, not doing research there. I’m sure the staff at NYU sees all this, too, and knows her chances of success are very low, which is why they’ve set up so many hoops for her to jump through in an effort to prove her dedication.

Well idk New York City is so fucked up right now it wouldn't surprise me if the landlord would get kickbacks from the city government because the person is in a wheelchair but she is White so I feel like that would also be a minus in the eyes of the NYC governing bodies.

Idk how APS works so much on the East Coast, but around here she would be lucky to get 20 weekly hrs of IHSS (in home support services) assistance through the state. Those folks are pretty limited on what they can do, and she will need to provide medical evidence she needs whatever support she's given. Plus, it's not like dial-a-slave; IHSS says "we'll pay someone this much for 20 hrs a week, but you have to find them and make sure they've done our training and aren't going to steal your grandma's pearls" she won't ever follow up hiring anyone and will whine that they expect her to do that part.

I doubt they'd put her in a group home. She's clearly still very abled and can get around and do stuff even if it's "hard." I actually would love to read the report APS makes after they assess her. They see munchies and/or hypochondriacs A LOT - people who want a free housekeeper and personal shopper on the state dime - and they don't fuck with them. There aren't enough group homes to go around to let someone like Vicky into one even if she wanted to live there.

They're in very short supply and I'm not even sure APS handles people who call in for themselves because they don't have enough resources. She'll probably get referred to Medicaid (they've got programs that provide home health care, although not sure she would be eligible because it appears she's on private pay insurance...?) and some non-profit orgs. She hadn't left the "upper" level in a full 6 months because she couldn't get down the steps. She also couldn't get in the bathtub because she couldn't lift her leg over the edge of the tub. She lived on cans of soup she could heat in the microwave that her neighbor would buy her. She hadn't had a proper bath in 3 months since a visit from a nurse after she had a fall. THIS is who APS is for, Victoria. Not your goldbrickin' munchie bullshit spewing ugly testosterone ruined ass.

Right, I know they handle self-reports but it's usually in the case of self neglect with adults with DDs or seniors. Vicky appears as a physically disabled person under the age of 60 who has cognitive capacity and is struggling getting hooked up to resources rather than something like... someone whose life is at urgent risk because their house is filled to the brim with trash and is infested with bed bugs, and has no working utilities. The example you provided is great in that it's so illustrative of the contrast between Vicky and someone genuinely in need of these services.

fuck it. I’m tweeting and then deleting this later. so as many of y’all know I had to leave home in 2017. I came out and it did not go well. however, after being homeless for a period of time, early this year I filed for child support against my parents.

My case was very strong so we settled. I get some $ every month, it’s not much, it’s juuuust enough money to survive nyc with. but it’s way more than I had. I now have a mediator for communication for logistical purposes.

I met with my mediator today. Here are some of the fun things my parents said to her:

3. All this while I know my father’s exact income last year because it was part of the court case, and they’re by far well into the 1%

A private school with a huge endowment like NYU is a good choice for some poor students, but not all. Victoria’s issue isn’t her tuition, though: she wants NYU to also give her a huge aid package to pay for all sorts of accommodations for her, including off-campus housing. Now, there are limits on how much federal aid can be given to a student, and then the school has the choice to make up the rest with scholarship, work-study, and grant money.

Honestly? NYU would indeed give her quite a bit of money if she was doing well academically. She is not.

Therein lies the rub. She is at extremely high risk of failure. She’s already left school once before. Why should NYU waste an incredible amount of money on her when there are other students waiting who would do better academically? Clearly Victoria did have some academic talent to get in to NYU, but none of that matters now since she hasn’t been able to prove herself.

I’ve visited the area NYU is in. It’s a wealthy, historic, and bougie part of the city. A cup of coffee and a pastry in a local coffee shop (not Starbies, it’s bougier than that) will run you around $15. Lunch in a restaurant would be even more. An Uber from Brooklyn to the West Village would be upwards of $40 each way, probably more. Like all areas of Manhattan now, there are a ton of rich Asians and Eastern Europeans that matriculate there. I hate to say it, but that area is really not made for poor people.
