Isn't Nick's parents still at his house? I'm of the mind that nick is staying fairly 'sober' because his parents are still in the house or at least very close by. He implies the person responsible for his treatment agrees because, while most patients are required to attend at least three times per week, Nick is told only to attend about once per week 'if you want to.'

Yet Nick says he chose to attend about three times per week. Why would he do that?

Here's my theory: As the recovery program is organised through the court and involves urinalysis on each visit, the court may have deemed participation in the program for three days per week sufficient evidence Nick is clean. So, rather than random testing, Nick could plan his drug use and alcohol abuse around a predictable schedule of tests.

Cocaine is bit tricker since that can turn up in your urine for up to 2 weeks. Alcohol is a bit better with only 2 days. Tester shows up on a Friday, you just pretend not to be home, tell them your away for the weekend, and they can came back on Monday (does it even work like that though? At least you'll know you have a test coming up I guess and still sober up).
Which does bring up a interesting practical question, Nick gets arrested for coke, can they only reasonably and reliably start testing 2 weeks later to check he hasn't been doing any since his arrest?

Those are custom molded and cost about $3000. He was on with Branca when he first got them and made a big deal out of how he needed that expense for tax purposes.

This graphic is kind of interesting. When I got my driver's license the instructor told us that regardless of what you actually do alcohol never leaves you system quicker or slower. The degredation is always the same. So if you have drunk so much you have a high alcohol level you need a certain time. What DOES help is your tolerance level. You might have a rather high alcohol level in your blood but you can actually function and not be a drooling mess
