As I understand it, Jim isn't particularly religious, something of an agnostic, but has been taking a look at the spiritual side of things as nearly anyone would when close to the end. As for me, if I were dying a slow and sometimes excruciating death, I'd like to think I'd ride it out to the end partly because suicide is a sin in my faith and partly because death is something that should be fought just as a matter of principle. I think you missed the bit where I said why it's unlikely that an autopsy would be done, which means the death certificate would list the underlying illness as the cause of death. We were specifically discussing ODs of painkillers, something which terminal patients are likely to be taking in high doses anyway.
