Apparently he first invested into it and then made a deal where he would get control of Broadcast.com while the guy who founded would get a monthly salary. Later he sold it to Yahoo, sold over a billion dollars of stock and the guy who actually created it got $50 million since his stake had been diluted to less than 1% of the company. Corporations doing Internet-related acquisitions back in the 1990s clearly had more money then they had sense at times.

Yahoo bought it in 1999 as part of their plan to buy the entire internet, competing against all of the other companies whose plans were to buy all of the internet. This directly lead to start-up culture as we know it and the 2000 dot-com crash. Everybody who had registered a generic domain name in the mid-90's became insanely rich.
