Hurricane Helene / Invest 97L

This is such a huge blow to the Appalachian areas like western NC. Even I40 got washed out. On top of the infrastructure failures, a lot of poor people just lost everything. God bless all the victims of this storm.

"I think we survived the storm, folks!"

Lmao he thinks just because there's no rain that there's no danger.
He doesn't even know the first of it. South Georgia barely had rain but the entire Southeastern part was hit very heavily. Reportedly trees down everywhere and dozens of cities completely in the dark.

Helene scored a critical hit. Retired name for certain. I will be curious to see the adjusted analysis, but I think there is a good chance due to her barometric pressure and speed of northern approach she entered the Appalachian Mountains as a Category 1 Hurricane. The only comparable storm would be Hurricane Agnes, and she just went in as a major rain storm.

There is no way in hell any of the counties from the government level to the people on the ground were ready for this. Florida is used to this shit, so Florida Man just hitches a rope to the gators floating by and is okay. Its just another late summer. Appalachia on the other hand doesn't have gators. Or Hurricanes. Until this week anyway.

These floods and debris flows literally act like tsunamis, Jesus Christ. It's a miracle the guy in this video is alive.

POV you are about to die.

This dude just recorded the last seconds of his life. And only God almighty spared him.

Storm woke me up at 3:30am or so yesterday, walked out in the eye to surveill damage, waited it out till about 6am. Went back out to clear debris from roads for about 6 hours before I had to go help friends and family. Lots of people bumbling around wanting to help but no one had any tools except me. Luckily every landscaper was out cutting trees and moving logs to open up the roads before most people were awake. New problem: everyone jumping on any open gas station to suck it dry, so you get 1000 people waiting in line burning up their gas for no reason. Then, people who want gas to actually do stuff can't get any. I think the ghetto gas station a few blocks from me was running a pump to empty their tanks for cash, or an enterprising thief. Could be either, there was a gun battle an hour later.

Been monitoring this thread for the past few days. This is Katrina 2.0, holy fuck, and it spread everywhere. Hope people have canned food, fresh water, and guns, it's going to be a wild ride
The political implications could be severe too. Lets not forget how Washington DC washed their hands of the East Palestine train derailment, along with their responsibility. Its crass to point it out but it has to be done. Biden and Kamala are in charge here and how they respond will have major implications. So far there has been muted realization in the metropole over just how bad things have gotten in Appalachia, and that needs to change swiftly. This is not going to get swept under the rug. Tennessee and North Carolina have been floored and can't cope. Relying on Virginia to rush in Air Ambulances and troopers is not a solution. This is a situation the Federal Government is supposed to exist for. They need to get too it.

Politically this is disastrous if not handled swiftly. If they are not flying in C-130's full of aid by tomorrow and sending supply trucks, this is going to cost them the electorate in those states for 100 years.

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else, but because it's relevant to one of the locations you mentioned, semi-popular retro enthusiast YouTuber LazyGameReviews (more commonly known by LGR) was apparently put out of home and livelihood by storm damages due to Helene. Just as a matter of note.

However you may feel about the guy, it really sucks hard since he's only been living in his Asheville property for about a year or so now.
I hope he warehouse/storage place is ok. But fuck me, he's probably lost most of it...

Blue Ridge Public Radio has been THE news source, so I suggest y’all keep up with them here.

Cajun Navy’s in Banner Elk. Got here quicker than the fucking feds.

EDIT: Coast Guard C-130s out of Elizabeth City are already there @WelperHelper99
Not surprised it's the Coast Guard getting shit done, the underloved military branch.

This is why "price gouging" should be legal.
Prices are the signal to allocate scarce resources.

In morbid news I saw this

I love the Coast Guard. Knowing their boots are already on the ground there is a comfort. I’m trying to keep up with all the aviation aspects of it. There’s already Blackhawks and Chinooks from various branches in there. Ospreys out of MCAS New River. NCANG has been stellar, though.

I figure I might was well teach kiwis what to do to try and get out of this unwinnable situation. Its not a guarantee at all. But it helps.

Step 1. Strip naked. Its counter intuitive and goes against everything you know, but clothes are a hinderance if you are about to be taken by a flood. They soak up the water and add extra weight. If you have lightweight shoes, leave them on as they can allow you to use your feet to push up off the river bank and rocks without hurting yourself. If you have boots on, take them off. Weight is the enemy.

Step 2. Take your pants and ties the leg ends around your torso as tightly possible in order to create a seal. Then take the waist end and slam it against your chest to try and capture an air bubble.

Example.

Step 3. Hold onto the air bubble for dear life and pray to almighty god.

Is Tennessee voting Democrat? No. Is North Carolina voting Democrat? No. Ergo the rich people in Washington don't care and are probably sniggering amongst each other about all the poor white people who lost everything.

Asheville (Portland of Appalachia) is full of communists who will always pull for the lever for (D). Everywhere else that got hit will never in a million years pull the lever for (D) because they've voted Republican since it was first legal to do so in those states. The rich DC Democrats can take their time.
