If anything, Max Landis is a look at how someone can be a thin-skinned crybaby while still landing million-dollar deals off mediocre-at-best screenplays. He's clearly a child of the internet in all of its cringey, irrational, attention whoring "glory".

Can anyone explain what the black list is? Is that like, a hollywood shitlist for terrible scripts that get passed around so no one wastes money making them?

To expand on what @wagglyplacebo said, despite its name, the Black List is actually a list of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. A lot of films from the list can go on to be produced, or if not it's a very good start to a screenwriter's career. Passengers, which is coming out later this year was a Black List script and so was The Imitation Game a couple of years ago.

That said, "best" is a very subjective term and I've read some terrible Black List scripts. American Hustle started life as a Black List script called American Bullshit, which is even worse than the film they ended up making (which felt like a first draft anyway). Also, I've read Untitled Lax Mandis Project and it's objectively awful, but it gets full marks for pissing this guy off. I could post the script here if anyone's interested.

Yeah, most liked by executives is more accurate, so pretty much a bunch of movie exec's liked a script that dumpstered Landis.

Please stop buying his scripts Hollywood. Aside from Chronicle, which just copied Akira, all of his movies are box office failures. The Power Rangers movie looks like a mess because of him.

My feelings on Max are very mixed.

On the one hand, I really like some of his work, especially his stuff related to comics, and I actually admire him to a certain degree. On the other hand, he has a tendancy to sort of stick his head up his ass too much, and reading some of the things he said has genuinely made me disappointed in him.

I don't think the Power Rangers movie has anything to do with the draft he wrote TBH.

Say what you will about him being a Tumblr/Reddit tier dangerhair attention whore, but he is right in that screenwriters have very little power or respect in Hollywood unless they're also successful directors. I imagine they're basically regarded as being only a single tier above the underage sex slaves in the Hollywood hierarchy. Whatever fame or infamy he has achieved it's been from a combination of being Jon Landis' son and a glory seeking drama queen. He has been plastering his face all over Youtube to screech about this or that for years now, which makes him somewhat the odd man out among screenwriters.

A lot of scripts are shit though, and unless the director is good then it will be a shit movie. There are exceptions of course, Hancocks original script was a billion times better than the movie we got, but it's why a lot of scripts are on those Black Lists. I guarantee a lot of those scripts are awful, and if they were made into good movies they were heavily edited.

His whining about this is moot point when he has huge connections to begin with thanks to his dad anyway.
