You're delusional. Pewdiepie uploaded kid-and-advertiser friendly content every day no matter what, MrBeast cracked the algorithm and is a tax wizard, both earned millions per month. The best James could do is Amazon affiliate links which was estimated to cost him at most a million bucks per year. There was no competition but AVGN made zero money for the first few years, too.
This.

James did have a lot of potential that was lost though. I think a big part of that was the fact that (love him or hate him) Mike was at least half of the AVGN character, if not more, and Bimmy (and Mike) by themselves just don't have the charm when separated. Kyle and Bootsy added icing on the cake. At the end of the day I'm pretty sure that both Truthers and all but the most mentally ill white knights can agree that Slobwave can go suck a fuck.

How is this game not a sponsorship deal?

Edit: lmao at "I was good at Contra, but not good at putting the code in."

imo most of James' lost potential comes from him refusing roles in real movies like Godzilla, even when the director really wanted to give him a part in that movie. That could have been a stepping stone away from AVGN slobwave faggotry into doing more with real movies which is what his dream always was. But as we know, James can't handle making a real movie without shitting the bed.

Yeah and as I said before, the director of that Godzilla movie wanted him to play the lead in his short horror movie.

James is thrown opportunities that he wastes

Yeah I think he still needs the money. Which is funny since if he hadn't squandered countless chances to expand or make connections he could have become big enough to make Pewdiepie/MrBeast look like a lemonade stand as he came on to the scene during a time when there was almost no competition. I really think if he had played his cards right he might have had a shot to fulfill his dream and become part of Hollywood although as a star, which is what he really wanted anyway, rather than the director he envisioned. As it is maybe he can pivot toward becoming the Angry Hasbeen Rocker Band Nerd and release videos about old rock bands from the 90s -60s since thats what he seems to be passionate about these days. Although that might betray that he really doesn't know much about that subject either.
There's no way James could've gotten to be massive celebrity level huge, but I do think he could've been one of those nerd Jesus types like Will Wheaton who used to show up on Big Bang Theory once a season or so and appear in small scale virgincore productions like Wheaton did with MST3K.

Next Monster Madness is confirmed to have only 6 reviews.

Also, Mike Matei pays 60 dollars on a game on day one, gives up on that in the tutorial, and then starts shilling the garbage Slobwave game instead.

He bought Mario Wonder day one, too, and spent the whole time shitting on it. Just a contrarian jackass. Even Minecraft with Gadget, when you strip the memes away, boils down to "popular thing bad."

He gave up on Zelda because the characters said Rift too many times.

That was his excuse. Nice 60 dollars drained in the toilet.

Matei has...I want to say stunted game development maybe?
I feel like if he plays a Mario game, he expects an experience straight from the 8/16-bit generation. He has very little patience for more modern trappings in newer retro style games. That isn't to say that he doesn't enjoy modern games, he just approaches some games with a very specific set of expectations and will happily baby rage if those expectations are violated.

He is the Nerd's Autismo Rage.

Also Iron Meat is a pretty good Contra clone, from what little I played of it but I'm a sucker for that old Japanese body horror/Giger-esque aesthetic in games.

That happens to a lot of people. We tend to find a "Sweet spot" for technology based on our generational experience. Anything before it will feel archaic and unusable, while anything after it will feel overly complex and confusing. For people in my generation, we'll gravitate towards the N64 or PS2 area of games, but for younger folks it might be Xbox 360, etc.

Mike may have this problem more than average, though. I don't know because I haven't heard much from him in years, since Screenwave.

Thats one of the sadder aspects of the woke craze sweeping the land. Rightwingers were delighted and Leftwingers were outraged at James coming out swinging as a proto Andrew Tate redpiller with the ghostbusters debacle. When in reality he was just expressing genuine confusion and distaste for an abomination ruining one of his childhood memories and never guessed or meant it to be political in anyway.

This poor innocent child is dead and gone. James has now seems to have been completely reprogrammed, memorized the sjw shit better than he knows games, and would probably kiss the movies ass today and bend the knee anyway they want. His wife was supposed to protect him from the outside world but instead it looks like he got brainwashed. Sucks what they do to these more vulnerable people like james.
James's wife seems kinda creepy. She teaches special-ed kids and married a special-ed adult. That just seems a little...odd. Like she wanted a simple man to control.

Not just the affiliate links, but Patreon and having more merch too. Not to mention James was getting people like Lloyd Kaufman and Gilbert Gottfried to guest in AVGN plus shit like the Godzilla director wanting to give him a cameo. He was never going to be the director he thinks he is, but he could've done a lot more things and gotten a lot more money than he actually made.

Monster Madness is my favorite thing that James still does. Can't wait until he passes off the responsibility to everyone else again leading into another lackluster Monster Madness. 6 reviews? Nigga that's less the the 80'sathon. This is getting pathetic but it was getting close to 5:40. Don't want to make April mad.

I commend Mike for his commitment to his specific brand of turbo-autism, it's endearing. I don't even know why he bothered to play Echoes of Wisdom, he must have known from the start it wouldn't be in his wheelhouse whatsoever. He'll say it's because people would otherwise constantly spam him asking him to play it, so essentially he paid $60 so he can tell those people to fuck off, I guess. Besides Mario Wonder, he also played the new Monkey Ball game and seemed to be bored out of his mind for almost the entirety of it. It's surprising how long he stuck with it, hanging onto the false hope it'd become more like the Gamecube one eventually.

I'm a fan of his and enjoy his streams a lot, but the guy will only really love a game when it's straightforward (he'll always skip any sort of story intro or dialogue if possible) and/or if the blueprint for that game is retro, difficulty included. Any ready-to-play game with punishing difficulty or mechanics he's accustomed to will get his attention. He'd rather play a poorly-made obscure side-scroller from 1992 for the fifth time, and in a way, I respect that he knows what he likes and doesn't pretend otherwise. It also often makes him look like an unreasonable, closed-minded moron throwing an embarrassing tantrum, but them's the breaks. He doesn't seem to care anymore. Good for him.

For someone who's been playing all those no-hand-holding games for so long he suuuucks at it. It's like he needs a few minutes to revv up his brain before it starts working at the new problem.
