From what I understand, he was around during the Facepunch days as well, so he's certainly deeply rooted within the community there. With this acknowledged, it shouldn't come as a surprise at all he ended up garnering the kind of fanbase he did.

Steam's moderation has been getting more reddit-infested in the last several years, but is still leagues better in general than there. If the review explicitly mentioned buttplugs I could see why it would have been nuked, if reworded to be more generic it might stay up. The main problem might be that it's a mod and not actually in the game by default, and I'm sure that Steam moderators/admins use this in a weaselly way to remove reviews rightfully calling devs out.

What happened to the ULTRAKILL community is very similar to what happened to the fandom for an equally violent series: Madness Combat. It’s become infested with troons, degeneracy, and softies obsessed with gore but are simultaneously the epitome of be gay do crime safe edgy. Men love games like this, and TiMs are men. Classic DooM modding has trannies all over it, but it's also full of normal men. Ultrakill seems like it's "degenerated on the vine" because of the chaser lead and the tranny artists, even it's a male made game for a mostly male audience.
