Been working on losing weight for the past several months and have made decent process (~20-30lbs) due to a combination of diet changes and treating some long-standing health issues. Now that I'm out of "easy weight" territory, though, it's been incredibly difficult to keep losing. The biggest problem has been diet--not because I can't control myself, but because the calorie deficit required to lose weight for someone at my height would be eating disorder territory for most other people. It's fucking impossible to plan meals around, and any resources I can find are filled with people starving themselves.

Calories in = calories out, yeah, but it's a little miserable.

Ditch the carbs. Once you are adapted, then you should be easily able to reduce your intake with starvation

I'm barely eating any to begin with, the only carbs I eat are whole potatoes because they're low calorie and high satiety. Ditching them takes out one of the best bulk options I have access to.

It sounds like fat bitch cope, I know, but my maintenence requirement is only about 1300cal/day, there's really not much more fat to trim (metaphorically speaking).

Are you toddler-sized? Already underweight? Or not moving/exercising at all?

I'm a short woman, only in the 'overweight' range right now, and my maintenance is around 2000-2200kcal if I only do very light exercise (aka household & daily walks), and around 2700-3000kcal when I'm doing intense exercise. Now, if I only sit/lie on my ass, and don't move at all, those calories will plummet to roughly 1600-1700kcal (saw that while being bedridden with the flu).

Inb4 "that's way too much, you'll gain if you eat over 2000kcal per day" - I'm autistically tracking my calories & weight, so the numbers have check out, especially since I've been constantly losing weight in the last months.

Toddler size + hypothyroid, regretfully. I'm definitely not as active as I could be, but with light exercise I get to a healthy deficit at around 11-1200. When I was in better shape I was barely maintaining at around 2k, and this was with walking multiple miles a day. My freshman fifteen was more like a freshman fifty, lol.

I've been managing, truthfully, it's mostly just been the meal planning that's been kind of annoying. I can mostly compensate by just eating a shit ton of greens and avoiding dairy.

I've been curious about hypothyroidism because I have pcos and am curious about the link. I started taking bovine thyroid and have been doing the ray peat raw carrot salad as well and have cut out seed oils entirely. I think im able to maintain on more calories now and have more energy in general. Maybe a bovine thyroid supplement could help you like it has myself. I haven't taken it long enough to notice a weight difference but I'll update if it helps me there.
It's a hard life barely losing weight on 1100-1200 calories though. Not alot of people get how much of a struggle it is for us. If I had a dollar for everytime I heard "Just eat less chips/cookies/snacks. Just eat in moderation!" I'd buy some ozempic or something. Lol

I recently started medication for it and immediately lost almost 20 pounds in the span of a month, it was insane. Thankfully maintenance isn't too grueling, it's mostly just losing that's the issue, but I definitely get you, lol. It always sounds like cope, but it's really hard to manage your weight when your metabolism is through the floor. At some point the only realistic option is to just pick up a sport, because there's only so much you can cut out of your diet before you're eating a can of green beans for dinner.

I can eat OMAD most days, and have fasted without any issue with hunger.
Most people can't do this while eating carbs.

Potatoes are high carb/GI ... your body will absorb it more readily (and if you give it a chance, it will store it as fat)
Eating fatty meat/eggs gives you a much longer satiety, and wont put you in a carb coma.

What are your opinions on a cheat meal per week or whatever you want to call it? If I have one I seem to retain water and weigh more for a few days but then I drop pretty drastically to below where I was the morning of the cheat meal. Seems to work in keeping my metabolism guessing but not sure if it’s the right thing to do or not? I rarely have junk food or overindulge, usually a nice restaurant meal with the missus or a cheese platter and whiskey. Not sure if I’d be losing more weight with or without it but it kinda does keep me sane.

So seed oils are a new boogeyman and I'm just wondering if that applies to whole nuts as well or just the concentrated oils derived from almonds and the like. I understand the general consensus these days is "fat not good, but not as bad as carbs in some cases" and "dear God no sugar" and "protein protein protein" so I'm wondering if a small handful of nuts as a snack is a good idea or a shit idea. And if it's a shit idea, what is a good snack? (Yes, yes, I know snacking bad but I'm a lardass who eats too much so don't expect me to suddenly develop iron willpower and cold turkey myself into three tiny meals per day. I've tried. It lasted a week, and then I was so sick of being hungry all the time I undid the progress I'd made.) Working up to being able to do a proper session on the cheapo rowing machine I recently acquired but it's slow going because it uses basically none of the muscles I developed by cycling all summer, so I am attempting to ensure caloric deficits daily but I have shit willpower and love food so it's tough.

Seed oils refer to highly processed oils due to the heat used to extract oils, and the high level of omega-6 oils found in them (as opposed to monounsaturated or saturated fats) which causes inflammation.

Nuts are entirely different. The main problem with them is that they're calorie bombs, but otherwise they're super healthy and full of good fats and minerals.

They also contain anti-nutrients like lectins, oxalates, phytates, phytoestrogens, tannins. It's little different from other seeds.

You don't want to eat most nuts raw (nor other seeds)

Unlike fruit, plants don't want anything eating their seeds (unless swallowed in fruit and pooped out).
We have to process them to de-toxify them for consumption. But some of these anti-nutrients remain and are consumed and mostly tolerated by the body .... up to a point.

Like other consumed poisons (smoking/alcohol/sugar), there is an accumulated effect of consuming them regularly (especially in quantity)

So...roasted salted good? Or still bad?

And if nuts are bad, then what? Sugar-free jerky...? But processed food is bad, too, so...uh... I'm looking for stuff I can munch at my desk at work rather than going to the vending machine, so anything more than sticking something in the microwave is out.

I think (plain) nuts are really good for us but they're high in calories and don't really fill us up. I know something I've reached for recently is little to go cheese squares. Sometime these can have a good amount of protein not to mention be tasty. I'm not an expert but I have recently picked up the meat stick + cheese combo as a delicious snack with some protein and that's very low carb. It's probably my favorite snack.
My personal favorite combo is a singular "croc bite" and 2 new primal pizza flavored chicken sticks. That's 140 cal for 15g protein total

Other than that if you are ok with some carbs you could do cheese, crackers, some meat and veggies with Greek yogurt dip all pre prepped. That's more of a lunch though but it's very tasty and satisfying to eat.

A trend you're going to notice is that all the things that are good are only good in moderation.

The solution is a lot more boring than you'd think it is, and common sense pretty much has already arrived to the same conclusion. Having a varied diet.

Despite stuff like sardines, red meat, broccoli, rhubarb, grapes, milk being all 'healthy' in their own ways and all containing desirable nutrients, you do not want to center your diet around just one of those things unless you want: mercury poisoning (seafood), ass cancer (red meat), thyroid issues (broccoli), kidney stones (leafy greens with oxalates), diabetes (fruit), anaemia (milk) the list goes on. Hell, you could argue that things that are completely essential to life like salt or water will fucking kill you if you overdo.

Just try to eat as much unprocessed food as possible, try to have a reasonably varied diet and hit your macros, with a special consideration to your (ideally unsaturated>saturated in this order) fats and protein, that's all there is to it

I make my own jerky most weekends as I have a pellet smoker grill.
I used to dry them in the oven, but you get a nicer taste when smoked lightly.
If you want you can put the sliced meat in various marinades (teriyaki used to be my fave) ... but now I just have them salted overnight in the fridge.

3 lb of meat makes ~ 1 lb of jerky. It's a shitload cheaper than buying it from the store

Nuts are not all bad, but you have to moderate how much/often you eat them.
