Nick, a nerd gamer underachiever, morphed his life into Kayla's model of raising a family. It had nothing to do with his own background: suburban Houston and then firmly upper-middle-class suburbia in Lakeview, MN, a mere 20 miles outside of Minneapolis.
I'm sure @Not Who You Think has thoughts. I hear a Kayla OP is on the way. My question is why Kayla needed so much support. There are not that many Millennials with money and education who are all that transfixed with the idea of eight kids (her goal), endless driving, and Evangelical orthodoxy.
What was she so afraid of in the far more affluent options (for Nick) a mere 90 min away in Minneapolis? She could easily see her family every weekend.
OR, instead, did she know that he was ultimately an underachiever and it was best to land him in her community with an easier bar for success? (She's talked with fondness about visiting him when he had his own office with the kids.)
Anyway, it's abundantly clear that Nick never felt at home in the Willmar community.
The OP was set to go up after Kayla's hearing in August in case new information came about in that time. Since that was delayed until late October I have been gathering more information. I currently have just shy of 500 pieces of media (the bulk being clips) and the word count for the script is sitting comfortably at a novella in length. Pending upload success, it will likely take at least a day for me to fully post.
Yes, Nick accommodated Kayla's needs regarding family. This is part of the complaining Nick did in late 2022 about doing things for everyone else in addition to explaining that he wouldn't even want to talk to the Kayla he first met in college anymore, implying that he never really shared Kayla's values of church attendance or participation in society in general. This has been documented in this thread.
Kayla likely wanted to be close to her family, but not too close. Kayla apparently wanted to be closer to some, namely her "bestie" cousin Rachel Scharafanow. They did a lot together, from making up a Star Trek dance as children to boudoir shoots for their husbands and even enjoying the Balldo within two weeks of each other.
Nick has reiterated that they lived away from others so they could have privacy (and protect their children, lol). There is a lot of truth in them wanting privacy as they would be able to keep a closer eye on their children (which was a priority at one time), keep up appearances with the more healthy society held by Kayla, and then go see dick shows on the weekends in the big city (even prior to 2022).
It wasn't familial support that Kayla wanted, otherwise their children's schoolroom wouldn't have been such a mess that NCAA Cat spent a weekend cleaning it and Nick wouldn't be driving all the time (trips to get drugs notwithstanding). Kayla wanted a wholesome life with none of the personal integrity, so living on the outskirts suited them best. They could appear where they wanted, when they wanted, and with enough time to change between appearances.
To put it another way, it was a more of a method of keeping others away and establishing selective social interaction. They had too many skeletons in their closet to do otherwise. Now they are both skeletons and one of them is still in the closet. Funny how that worked out.
