A teenager, a 16 year old boy, dives off the seaside promenade in Beirut, Lebanon and slips before the dive. It doesn't look like it, but water is heavy as fuck. Imagine trying to open a door with a 30km wind on it. Water is much, MUCH worse.

Sadly the poor bastard could probably have managed to open it once the pressure equalized, as in once the water was high enough inside the car that a similar amount of area on the inside and outside of the door were under the water. But he panicked, because well "fucking shit I just crashed into a river and I can't get out" once he tried it. He had the right idea trying to break the window but couldn't do it because most modern safety glass windows in cars are quite strong.

I wonder if he had a chance to roll the window down. I am not sure how well insulated the electrics of modern cars are and how long the window rolling mechanism would keep working but maybe he could have managed to open the window if he was quick. However once the water got to the window even a waterproof roller would be useless because, again, the weight of the water on the glass would pushing it and probably overload the motor. Though even if he had just managed to roll down the window by a inch or two he would have a much easier way breaking it and leaving.

Absolutely horrifying.

You can also see he has those removable headrests that have metal prongs on them to break the glass in emergency. Auto makers specifically made them that way for this exact purpose.

Oh well. At least he remembered to put his phone in his sun visor to keep it dry.

He also should have tried to kick out the window right after he failed to get the door open. He might have managed it without all the river water pressing against it by the time he tried it. Hindsight is easy when it's not happening to you though.

He did try to open it, but it was too late as the water submerged the car enough to shut off the electrical systems. Maybe he could have tried to smash the sunroof glass open, but I'm not sure if that sunroof cover is a solid plate or just fabric covering.

Panic didn't let him think, and when he tried it not only was the electrical systems of the car already likely fucked but the car was also down enough that water was by then pressing on the roof meaning that even if the motor worked it would be likely unable to cope with dozens of extra kilos of weight from the water pressure holding the sunroof in place.

The covering for those tends to be a plastic shell and some fabric, but I would guess that sunroof glass is even sturdier than window ones because it has to cope with random shit like fruits or birds and stuff falling on it.

I heard from a supervisor once that they had to watch a bunch of videos of people getting killed by automatic overhead doors, as it's a safety violation to walk under one as a pedestrian.

Unrelated: I'd like to do the Mythbusters experiment of getting submerged in a car. I have one of those window breakers and I'd like to think my window rolling skills/opening the door while underwater would work. Terrible way to go though.

There was a whole Mythbusters dedicated to the question of how to escape when your vehicle is submerged in water. In short, the pressure of the water when submerged even as little as 3 ft is enough to make it extremely difficult to impossible to kick out the windows. Even if the car door has a mechanical handle for rolling down your window, you're still fucked. It takes roughly 10-15 minutes for the pressurization between the inside and the outside of the car to even out enough to be able to open it. You're obviously dead by then.

If his seat's headrest wasn't designed to be able to break open the windows, he could still have bought a hammer that's specifically designed to bust them open for $5-$10. Imagine spending on a dashcam for your vehicle, but then skimping out on the save-your-life hammer.

I found a news article about this one: -

A Charlotte man has been charged with aggravated assault after he is accused of brutally beating a transgender woman on a Charlotte Area Transit (CATS) bus over the weekend. Video of the attack was posted on social media Wednesday night and went viral.

According to police, the attack happened early Saturday morning on a CATS bus along the 400-block of N Tryon Street in Charlotte. An officer was reportedly flagged down by a man who witnessed the attack, telling the officer that the victim was punched and kicked in the face by a man on the bus.

The 24-year-old victim, who goes by Jayla Ware, was taken to Presbyterian Hospital to be treated for her injuries, which includes a broken jaw. She was later released from the hospital.

Graphic video was posted to Facebook showing a man, later identified as Roy Eugene-Lav Hedman, hitting and kicking Ware in the head multiple times. The video was shared thousands of times before being removed from the social network.

The video shows Hedman and Ware engaged in an argument on the bus before Ware stands up, leans over Hedman and pushes his head to the side.

Hedman then stands up and attacks Ware. He can be seen in the video violently punching her in the head more than two dozen times.

When Ware appears to be knocked out from the punches, Hedman then stomps her in the head with his boots. He stomped on her head at least twelve times.

According to officials, police began searching the area immediately for the Hedman. He was located and arrested a short distance away from where the incident occurred. He is charged with aggravated assault inflicting serious injury.

WBTV spoke to Ware on Thursday. She said Hedman was a friend, and that she has known him for some time. She said Hedman's sister even visited her after the attack.

She said others have also reached out to her.

"I'm glad that a lot of people really have stepped up... tried to reach out to me," she said. "And I thank God, because, if anything - I could have been dead."

Ware said her face is still swollen in several places and she'll have to have surgery on her broken jaw. She says she's still in pain and has trouble swallowing and eating.

Hedman has been arrested at least 20 times in Charlotte on various charges including resisting arrest, trespassing, protective order violation, drug charges, breaking and entering, common law robbery and probation violations. Hedman has also been charged with assault on a female three separate times - in January 2018, December 2017 and May 2017.

Ware can't remember anything about what happened but says she has been in fights before. This time she never punched back.

"I didn't do none of the sorts," she said. "I was just gone and getting my face teared through."

Ware says that's not the life she wants to be associated with anymore.

"It's time to slow it down a bit. I don't have time to be getting my jaw broken again," she said.

Ware says she knew several of the people on the bus that night, none of which stepped in to stop the attack. She added that she's learned from the experience, and has a message for others.

"Watch out for who your friends are - who you think they are," she said. "Pick and choose your friends wisely."

She is grateful that she wasn't hurt more and is ready to move on, saying "I need to keep my head forward and keep a smile on my face."

Charlotte Area Transit released a statement to WBTV about the assault that states, in part:

"Safety protocols and procedures were followed. All CATS vehicles have several security cameras used to help ensure the safety of our customers and employees [...] The suspect has been banned from all CATS property and vehicles for one year. CATS urges customers to report any and all criminal activity by calling 911 or using the CATS See Say app."
