It completely misunderstands how shields were used, I can understand why these men are so upset. Small heater shields like those were designed for heavy cavalry, where the rider would use it to deflect strikes while he charged with a lance. It’s entirely unsuitable for infantry, let alone chainmail bikini infantry. The original design was clearly inspired by ancient hoplites, and thus made use of a hoplon, which was a large, round shield that could absorb strikes against the body, which would be less heavily armoured than the head, feet, and shoulders (which needed to be armoured because the shield couldn’t protect them). Changing the shield while keeping the rest of the panoply completely defeats the practicality of the armour!
