As a North Carolinian, but not an Appalachian, I was not surprised by this at all. The area is too white, too rural, too Southern, and too Appalachian for the media to care. No majority negro city with a "vibrant" culture like New Orleans for them to obsess over. The towns and villages around New Orleans were forgotten too. There will be no Spike Lee documentary or David Simon HBO series. No celebrity telethon with a funny Kanye moment, only a few have even donated, like Dolly Parton. Just a bunch of North Carolinians trying to pick up the broken pieces.

Trust me, I understand completely. A lot of people have been donating in my town, and we're getting a lot of first hand and second hand accounts too from people who drive back and forth and have friends working there. People who fly helicopters have said they can see bodies in trees, all sorts of horrible shit.
Let me be clear, I have no malice towards the people fleeing or the power crews, but they create a hectic environment every time, it's always memorable.
