/horror/ general megathread - Let's talk about movies and shit.

I need some seriously good horror movies. Paranormal specifically. I also liked the Saw movies. So either paranormal or whatever genre saw is. Stuff like that. I am feeling so dry for high quality horror.

I am currently considering The Pope's Exorcist, Longlegs, Martyrs.
I went in blind to watch Longlegs and was pleasantly surprised. It's entertaining enough that I had a good time with it.

As for paranormal horror I recommend the first two Conjuring movies. The third ones not awful but I found the marketing somewhat misleading.

I remember watching this version of Dracula on PBS back in the 1970s. It lacks the style of, well, pretty much every other version, but it's fairly accurate and Louis Jourdan's Dracula has a feral menace to go with his sophistication. I find his version of Dracula very unnerving, since he seems less like a played up character and more like a guy you'd actually meet in real life.
I'm going to check that out. Looks interesting. You can find a lot of good classicaly creepy made for TV movies from back in the day.

I forgot to mention it in my other post, but before watching Poltergeist I watched From Dusk to Dawn. Not exactly a scary movie but it had a very unnerving performance from Quentin Tarantino. I don't know how much of it was just solid character acting and how much is just Quentin himself.

I should probably get round to watching Black Christmas like I said I would two and a a half....huh how fitting given the meme....weeks ago, before we straight up reach Christmas and I have to find excuses not to follow up on my christmas horror marathon

The conjuring movies are some of my favorites of all time. Right up with saw. I should rewatch them.

I adore the SAW films. Some of them (I-III, VI, X) are genuinely solid films that deserve a lot more praise.

Watching videos about "the things you missed" made me appreciate them even more than I do now.

I don't care what people think, I love the Saw movies, even the shitty ones like 7/3D and Jigsaw. I really hope that they bring back Hoffman for 11. He was always much more fun to watch than John or Amanda. I don't know when 11 is supposed to take place in the timeline, but it would be cool if they eventually continue on from what happened at the end of 7/3D.

I still haven't gotten around to watching that spinoff movie with Chris Rock (wtf?).

The only things I know about the Saw movies are the design and voice of Jigsaw and it involves elaborate death traps if I'm not mistaken. I'm curious if people exaggerate how intense the gore in those movies is.

The gore can be pretty gruesome at times, so not really an exaggeration.

People like to say the SAW films are just gore / torture porn and nothing else, but there's far more substance to them than you'd think (it's an evergrowing clusterfuck of an entertaining soap opera). If they were just that, then I never would have taken a liking to them in the first place; I need some substance in my horror.

Terrifier is an example of gore porn, but not SAW.

the only reason i like saw so much is because of story and related stuff. John Kramer imo was pretty interesting.

Speaking of which, I take this sequel as a personal attack:

The original Dark Knight of The Scarecrow is far too often overlooked in favour of other slasher movies. I'm not just saying that because I think the idea of a killer scarecrow sounds cool to me.

I assume that Spielberg has shown no interest in it and the bean counters are seemingly still trying to figure out the ideal nostalgia exploitation for a part 3.
Wasn't there an animated show that was coming out about Gizmo or something? I heard about it for a bit and then it seemed to disappear. Maybe they see no profit in it.

Just watched "Milk and Serial" (free on Youtube) and it was pretty worth it. Made me hate the bad guy and feel satisfied by the end that I'd had a frightening experience that wasn't exploitative or overwrought or just sadistic for no reason. Had good reveals throughout, and every little bit of dialog does come back and/or mean something. Liked it.

What do you mean, you don't like it?

For my money, Night of the Scarecrow (1995) is the definitive killer scarecrow movie and I will always defend this POS.

It was some 3D abomination like Gremlins Attack or some shit that dropped on a streaming service for 2 seasons.

It's been quite a while since I watched The Wailing, but I recall liking it quite a bit. I remember it being a bit long, but never boring. A good mix of mystery and supernatural elements.
Wailing is great: I know "subverting the expectations" is a bit of a meme, but the movie kept you on your toes, never knowing who to root for. That movie keeps messing with you. I'm not a big fan of Asian horror (love Korean thrillers tho), but Wailing, yeah, thas some good shit.
