There's no reason to feed a varanid (monitors and related) live vertebrate prey, but i see it a lot. I think it's because of how brutal monitors (or tegu, or even tokay geckos) dispatch mice. It's probably one of the grossest parts of the hobby. Most monitor species kept in captivity are primarily insectivorous. These people are doing it because it's brutal, and they *should* be monitored.

That's exactly what it is. It takes some training and work to get an animal taking f/t, and even then it's not a guarantee. Hoggies are a special case because their typical prey is frogs/toads, so it's even tougher to get them acclimated to a rodent diet, and even then it's not a guarantee.

I don't know much about lizards, to be fair, I only know snakes.

So, for most lizards, including monitors, there is/was a lot of bad advice out there for a long time. Fortunately, a lot of biologists (including youtube reptile "celebrities") are turning the tide, at least for some species. It's a lot of work, because not many normal people keep reptiles, and an even smaller proportion keep the tough ones (like Savannah or Nile monitors). That's why it's important to watch, but not blast those people - it's a tossup between misinformed or sadistic.

Part of me wonders if it's due to a higher species diversity/forest coverage encountered in places like Appalachia and the Ozarks which often are lower in economic status etc. A lot of people get acquainted with their local fauna just by growing up around them.

Probably a bit of the "me like scary predator" thing too which is often how you get whackjob primate keepers and Tiger King type people. You don't see as many of these sorts of people interested in butterflies or birds.

I've definitely encountered some such people in herpetology circles (and they can often be very lolcow-ish).

Some of them are. It's also weird concentrated around likely autism havers, possibly because reptiles are solitary, easy to understand and do best with difficult but precise care. I know more than a couple of [insert type of] engineers (one of which worked at NASA as a chemical engineer) that have entire rooms dedicated to the hobby, and every single of one them has at least one "big scary predator" type animal. Usually, those people are pretty good at opsec, so if they are also monkeyfuckers, it's going to be tougher to pin them down, I think.

Oh yeh, there's some *real* weirdos in the hobby. Most of the fun of going to a reptile expo is "cheap zoo" + "weird people watching". I think these are the people that our doxxers are catching for the most part.

Spoiler: Slight PL/tangential topic ranting

I'm not sure if it has to do with lower economic status though - (PL but) I keep a few reptiles around and their care is *expensive*. My savannah monitor* eats so many bugs a month that it's more economical for me to breed my own and that requires a lot of room and a lot of time to devote to it. My couple snakes** both eat frozen prey, that shit is unreasonably pricey.

Some people I see at these shows have collections of snakes ranging in the 40s easily. I have no clue how they can financially deal with that.

*rescued from a kid of a family friend who was way overwhelmed by the amount of care it takes. I can definitely see the appeal of this species as they're very clever, pretty large and kind of looks like a velociraptor.
