You have no clue how much this thread was needed. There is so much history of the internet we need to remember and put on display.

It may sound nutty but I also think it would be a good idea to have a “retro forum” to help preserve the past even more. It’s just a thought for now. The internet before trannies and politics- no agenda, just funny images with captions we call “memes” today, and how they evolved. Now that is worth memorializing

When my mum died I went through her computer before formatting it and donating it to a friend.

It turned out my mum had a real fondness for lolcats and had built up a neatly-organised collection, over 200 in all. So here are the highlights of a 68-year-old woman's favourite archaic internet felines:

It's a video and not an image but it's ancient. Pre-2000 even. If you saw this when it first came out it was likely you were using an actual phone modem.

Stop making me feel old. I remember saving up to buy my first phone modem because our computer didn't have any networking built in.

All Your Base may have also been the first meme I can remember people I knew sharing around.
