Perfume and fragrance chat

I also got a sample of Tyrannosaurus Rex by Zoologist out of curiosity and it's vile. Reminiscent of burnt meat, in the worst way.
It's like Kouros, either you love it or hate it. Zoologist Hyrax is similar. Then again, Tom Ford Black Orchid is supposed to smell like a sweaty ballsack and I got just a pedestrian oriental from it. For spicy florals, have you tried Frapin 1270, Essence Rose No. 1 by Elie Saab, Naomi Goodsir's Or du Serail, Tom Ford Rose Prick, Imaginary Authors' Decisions, Decisions or Penhaligon's Lily & Spice? The last is a favorite of mine, but discontinued and hard to find.

Damn I'd have high hopes for a fragrance called Tyrannosaurus Rex
It's definitely interesting, I'll give it that, but it's not something you want to be smelling for long, let alone wearing on your body. Here's the description:

A sultry heat wafts across the land, lapped up greedily by the abundant flora that thrives in its midst. Trees soar to majestic heights and plants flower for the first time, their petals spreading to give birth to a world rich in diversity. The Cretaceous period comes of age against a backdrop scorched by wildfire and lightning strikes. Over this turbulent landscape, a massive predator looms. Giants rule the earth, but even giants can be cut down within the powerful jaws of the fearsome tyrannosaur. Standing tall, the terrifying beast fears nothing, until that pivotal moment when a fire in the sky signals the end of their deadly reign.

Zoologist Tyrannosaurus Rex is a gargantuan scent that sinks its teeth into the world of delicate fragrances and rips it wide open. Primitive woods and florals seize you and snatch you away to an ancient era. Smoky, charred wood warns of the danger of smouldering fire, setting your senses on edge, while droplets of metallic rose oxide offer a chilling premonition of blood-lust. The mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex is sometimes menacing, sometimes fascinating, but never, ever ordinary.

Perfumer: Antonio Gardoni
Parfum Concentration: 23%
Size: 1.5mL / 0.05 fl. oz.
Top Notes: Bergamot, Black Pepper, Fir, Laurel Leaf, Neroli, Nutmeg
Heart Notes: Champaca, Geranium, Jasmine, Osmanthus, Rose, Ylang Ylang
Base Notes: Resins, Cade, Cedar, Civet*, Frankincense, Leather*, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Vanilla

All I get is wood + sweaty animal, personally. Maybe like a horse barn that caught on fire.

I got several Zoologist samples. Bee's not bad but it's just honey smell (not getting much of the florals), not worth the price tag. Maybe good for layering but I rarely bother with that. I like Moth personally but I could see people getting "grandma" from it. I like Civet but it's too masculine for me to wear. I LOVE Squid but there's a time and place for it. I can't decide if I like Bat or not. I find myself sniffing the sample vial a lot. But do I want to wear it? Maybe I need to layer it with something more feminine.

I'll look into those for sure. I like Imaginary Authors.

So I have a bit over a dozen perfumes, plus a bunch of little sample vials, that I collected about a decade ago when I was really interested in fragrance before suddenly getting bored with it (or maybe I realized I was spending too much money Idk). I decided a while back that I should start trying to use them up at least, and definitely not buy any new ones, despite the interest coming back.

Well I randomly heard about Baie 19 from Le Labo and how it supposedly smelled like fresh rain in a forest. That peaked my interest, but reviews said it wouldn't be a good blind buy, so I ordered a sample vial, half hoping I wouldn't like it. I ended up loving it, and it completely made my other "rain" everyday scent smell like shit in comparison. So now I'm thinking I'm going to have to buy a full bottle even though Le Labo is pretty spendy. I could honestly probably wear it everyday. It starts off almost too masculine even though I usually like unisex scents, but it dries down into something really beautiful and definitely evokes a forest-after-rain kind of feeling.

Favorite vanilla scents?
I'm not sure if it's still being produced, but I really like Boss Orange by Hugo Boss. It's not purely vanilla, but vanilla is definitely the most prominent note without being too sweet imo.

I used to be way too into LUSH bath bombs and face masks, but are their body mists or perfumes any good for their price point?

Glad it worked for you! I got an ambroxan bomb from it, unfortunately. Quite sad because I love petrichor and forest scents in general. Olympic Rainforest by Olympic Orchids nails that vibe for a mossy forest moreso than a rainy one.

I saw that one mentioned in the thread (might've been you that posted about it) and I kinda wanna try that one as well. Especially since it's from a Northwest-based company and is going for a PNW temperate forest scent, which I'm always chasing after.

Any perfume that smell like chocolate? Not intrusively so though
Not to repeat myself, but Olympic Orchids has both California Chocolate (orange chocolate) and Seattle Chocolate (dark chocolate), neither of which is overly sweet. Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille has a patchouli chocolate note as well. A good gourmand that is more tonka forward and smells like tiramisu is Masque Milano's Madeleine, and I have recently been enjoying the peach amaretto vibe of Peach's Revenge by Sarah Baker.

I love Twilight and Rose Jam ...

Twilight is one of my "holy grail" (wow, that's a term from the 2010s haha) lavender fragrances. And Rose Jam is a very nostalgic fragrance for me.

The Lush body mists are more pricey than your average body mist, but in my experience, they definitely perform like a perfume. They're strong!

Managed to get Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady for half a price for 100mL brand new.
One hell of a smell.
Literally 1 spray and it fills a room.
I have the tiniest bottle of perfume oil of this masterpiece of a fragrance.

It's so beautiful, and yes, it's insanely strong.

I have like 4 sol de janeiro's but I've been considering getting an actual perfume for Christmas. I sampled a bunch because I got some samples with an order and the only one I liked was Amazing Grace by Philosophy. Is there any cheap alternative or should I just fork over the cash?
Have you been sampling at Sephora? They're definitely an expensive store. Target probably had something similar.

There are also discount shops where you can get them cheaper. I use Jomashop and Fragrancenet. You can also get decants at places like scentsplit for pricier perfumes if you're fine with less perfume like I am (since I don't overspray and 10ml lasts me a while).

I am tempted. I think this might work on a fag like me better than on a woman.

I've been shocked a few times that a fragrence that smelled nicely musky on me, instead made my mother smell like like a dusty garage or something. And she was trying it because she liked how it smelled on me. Frankincense and leather are both definitely two notes that I think work better on male skin than women.

Last year I gave scented faux flowers to my dementia clients and it was a big hit. Does anyone have recommendations for egregiously Christmas-y fragrences of any price point lol? Anything show-stopping, anything fun. Last year I borrowed from a friend's crafty grandmother LOL, and I don't recall what it was, just that it smelled super strongly like sugar cookies.

For predominantly vanilla, Nemat's Vanilla Musk is pretty good, and so is Amuze Fragrance's Vanilla Musk. Sucre Vanille from Poesie is nice if you can find it - I can't remember if it's discontinued or seasonal now.

I prefer my vanillas as mostly vanilla rather than combined with stuff like orange or pine.

I hated it both in the bottle and on myself, unfortunately. My fruity brother disliked it too, but he's vegan so maybe it just activated his prey instincts.

If you can't find a sample anywhere and have no concept of personal privacy, DM me and I'll mail my sample to you. I will never use it anyway.

Thoughts on Joop! Homme? I recently borrowed my parent's very old bottle just to try it out and I don't hate it, I don't just tolerate, I LOVE it. Instant favourite. I really cannot understand the hate for it, other than the fact that it's very strong and I can imagine a lot of assholes overspraying it. Maybe it's just how it smells on my skin - it's spicy, sweet, but not overbearingly girly sweet, unnatural, sexy and androgynous. Fits someone who is simultaneously flamboyant and messy, slobby even. I went out in it a couple times but I don't dare go anywhere with it where people are forced to be close to me in fear of committing olfactory terrorism.

Also I ordered a million tiny samples from Zoologist, Imaginary Authors, Comme des Garçons and something else I can't remember the name of. Super excited, especially about Odeur 53 and Snowy Owl.
