ik ik i should’ve waited but the reminder was annoying me

Has 18.0.1 made any difference? One of the update fixes lists
  • Performance may be impacted due to an issue with memory allocation on some iPhones
Or are you on something like an XR where 18 is likely the final major iOS update the device will get and as is usually the case will run like shit because of it.

Yeah looks like it smoothed out some lag and keyboard freeze for 14pro

It should be obvious, I had a friend who was a complete dipshit with tech and his brother who constantly fucked with him told him to update his Mac stuff super early in an iOS update like a dev/beta user or something and he bitched for months about nothing working. This guy was king of the Mac vs PC arguments and thought apple just worked perfectly always. But he went from installing shit at the last minute to bring a beta and almost pulled a Nasim. It was hilarious to us.
I also delay Windows updates by the maximum allowed amount: 1 month. That saved me from dealing with the BSOD screw up that infected millions of Windows machines a couple of months ago.
Or if it turns out there's a planned obsolescence by older phones struggling to run the new OS.

Honestly I wish there were better alternatives to Android and iOS, like a proper Linux phone or blackberry necromancy or something
Yes, the intentional slowing of older phones that was discovered a few years ago was not Apple’s finest moment.

You make a good point: iOS is pretty secure and reliable, but you’re locked into a closed system. Android phones report home about EVERYTHING and its app store is full of malware, but you can swap out and add hardware as you please.

There seems to be a real opportunity for an intrepid OS developer who combines the best of iOS and Android and leaves out what’s disliked about them.

For those that missed it...

A few days ago, 200 M4 MacBook Pros were taken from a warehouse in China, and smuggled into Russia, where they are currently being sold on the grey market, for $7200 to $7500 each.

Some of the larger Russian techtubers have bought them and are showing them off, with tidbits such as the M4 having a 10 core 4/6, having 16 GB RAM at base, 3 Thunderbolt 4 ports, and available in space black, as well as Geekbench results appearing (as Mac16,1).

Apple's not commenting, naturally.

After wanting one since they first came out, I bought myself a Series 10 Apple Watch in black aluminium (but with cellular just in case I ever use that) with much of my first paycheque from the new job. Next on the list will be a new phone, I’m still on an iPhone 11 with a cracked back glass and a battery down to 70% health. I’ll be going for a 16 Pro Max.

Will you sign up for Apple Care?

I’m a butterfingers, so definitely when I get the next phone, especially since I’m going to try to go for a higher storage tier, depending on my budget. I didn’t get Apple Care for the watch because I figure dropping it isn’t really a thing that’s going to happen. I suppose I could knock it about when working on cars or something, but for these instances I’m probably going to take the watch off.

Speaking of the watch, I’ve had it a week today and I love it. It’s giving me all sorts of insights into my health, sleep and whatnot. It runs rings around my old Xiaomi Mi Band. The integration between phone and watch is awesome, but I have noticed a couple of things. Handwashing detection doesn’t always work, or activates late, and you have to be deliberate with your tap gestures, but it’s still the coolest thing about the watch.

I’m also wondering if there’s a way to make my morning alarm go off on the phone and the watch, because I don’t always feel the watch vibrating to wake me up.

As far as battery life goes, it’s awesome. I’ve done some testing and I’ve gotten a bit over 32 hours off a single charge, with no power saving features enabled. Screen always on, etc. Way more than the claimed 18 hours, and I’m not the only one. The battery life was my biggest “what-if?” about going for the series 10 over the Ultra. But I’m stoked with the battery life I’m getting.

All in all, I’m super happy with it, and I can’t wait to upgrade my iPhone too.

Try this setting, I had that same problem when I got my watch a few years ago.

Also IMO get AppleCare for the watch. It’s incredibly easy to slam it into a door frame, and the Apple care is fairly inexpensive compared to replacing the entire thing.

Also you mentioned the 16 Pro max, but you may want to look for deals on the 15. Besides the camera button there’s basically no upgrade, and the action button does the camera already. I have a 15 pro max and there’s been nothing about the 16 that seems worth it.

Thanks, I’ve changed that and hopefully it’ll wake me up better. As for Apple Care, well, that expires tonight and I haven’t got the funds for it right now. I don’t tend to knock my arms about all that much, so I’m hoping I’ll be ok. Undecided if I want a screen protector or not.

As for the phone, I’ll be going for the 16 pro max. I like to keep my phones as long as possible, so I bank on there being a fair few years of updates. Plus I have played with that slider, and I kinda want it, not gonna lie.

If I were upgrading from a 15 to a 16, yeah, I wouldn’t bother, but from an 11 is such a huge leap that I think it’ll be worth it.

Apple Care is overpriced but convenient as hell. If you do extend it, though, avoid third party ripoffs. They're almost all terrible. If you do decide to get one of these cheaper plans make sure to check out reviews first.

Yeah, I’m definitely getting it for the iPhone, though. If I’m gonna spend nearly $3,000 on one (if I want the 1TB version, and I’d like to get into YouTube as a hobby where it would be nice to not have to dangle an SSD off the end of the phone), I’d be mad to not have it. I’d also like to have the hi-fi Spotify tier, too, if they ever fucking release it for my country. Audiophile stuff.

I just hope I don’t break the watch. I *think* I’ll be ok. As said, I don’t knock my arms around that much. We’ll see though.

If you're a data hoarder like I am with my 15 PM, it's quite worth it.
Just wish it weren't so damn expensive.
I’d reckon you use it, but if you don’t the apple usb c to 3.5mm adapter is quite excellent for the cost of it being like $10 or so. Otherwise I’d get a small portable dac that’s $100 USD (Quidelix 5K - great portable dac/amp combo).

400gb of apps!? Damn I thought I was a hoarder. I just offload everything to my NAS or to iCloud.

Best Buy has the M2 Pro 1tb iPad on sale for $1100 if anyone is shopping for one right now. Keep in mind the 1Tb models come with 16gb of ram as a hidden upgrade, which will probably be important for AI.

I just bought 2 iPads and am kicking myself looking at this sale.

Damn, you don’t see many 1TB phones. I am definitely a data hoarder, but everything of mine is in iCloud on a 2TB plan.

As far as a DAC goes, I already have one, a Fiio E17k that’s… somewhere. I honestly haven’t used it in ages. AirPods Pro are my go-to headphones at the moment. I’ll be upgrading to the Pro 2 at some stage in the not-too-distant future. I like the way the original ones sound, but they are buggy. I’m hoping that’s not the case in the second gen.

But yeah, Fiio have all sorts of portable DACs, lightning, USB-C, even Bluetooth, so you can make your existing cans wireless. Well worth a look if you’re into that sort of thing.
